AA car insurance renewal nigtmare.

I have been with the AA for my car insureance and road side recovery for a year now and they sent me a rather attractive renewal quote and said I need to do nothing it will renew automatically.
Only it seems they did not process the payment and failed to contact me about it. So they sent me a letter today saying if I don't pay they will cancel the policy. I phoned up immediately after reading the letter and they say they cancelled the policy and that I cannot re-instate it. They provided me a quite which was £150 more than the renewal quote and cannot and will not match the quite for my renwall. Not only that, this means I have been driving illegally with my Baby son for the past few weeks totally unaware I was uninsured.
They wont re-instate the policy and when I ask them why they did not contact me, they say they sent a letter (I never received it), they say they tried to call me on the 4th and didn't get through.
I even spoke to them regarding the renewals quote (before and aftet the policy renewals date) for my roadside recovery and not once did they say tthere was a payment problem.
Is this acceptable?? what can I do besides complain? when they asked if I'd like to renew I told them to shove it and also asked to cancel my roadside assistance, which which they said the couldn't as they are the the insurance part of the business.

You need to try and get them to re-instate the iriginal policy - grovel if need be!
Otherwise you will find getting cover elsewhere is nearly impossible! You have to declare that you have had a policy cancelled for evermore!
So don't embark on a rant with them, but try and speak to a manager and get an amicable settlement!
In the meantime don't drive until you have cover in place.0 -
What has having your baby in the car to do with driving uninsured.
It's irrelevant, stick to the facts when you ring them.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Not much but some people respond (as in Cusomter service agents) more favourably if you use an emotive context.
I'd like to think that when I'm driving in my car with my son in if the worst were to happen I'd be covered rather than 1) not being able to claim even if it was not my fault and 2) not being done for driving without insurance in the process.0 -
You really need to appeal this using their Complaints Procedure.
As Quentin has said, you will find it almost impossible, or at best very expensive, to get any type of insurance in the future as you will need to declare this forever.0 -
Well I have found a comparible quote from a certain Meerkat.
But my plan is to take the train to work tomorow and appeal the issue during the day when its more likely I will be able to speek to someone superior.
However, I'm not sure how easy that will be, getting though to superiors is like getting blood from a stone.0 -

Maybe you answered the question about "Any driver insurance declined, cancelled, voided or special terms imposed" wrongly?
(Usually the Meerkat won't give you any quotes when you select "yes" in answer to that question)0 -

Oh come on, thats a bit of a stretch isn't it. It can't be officially canceled if they never fully instanciated the policy. Also its not a proper cancelation, if they offered to provide me with a new quote.
A proper cancelation would be 'goodbye and dont come back'.0 -

You told us as part of your "nightmare" that your policy had been cancelled:Scottie_UK wrote: ».... So they sent me a letter today saying if I don't pay they will cancel the policy. The AA act as brokers, so presumably the new (more expensive) quote they have offered you is with a different insurer.
But you do need to get back to the AA and make sure your policy has not been "cancelled", as you originally told us, as not disclosing this cancellation can mean you end up with a void policy from the meerkat!
Get them to confirm in writing to you that you don't now have a cancelled contract on your record.0 -

My policy counts as did not wish to renew, according to the conversation I had. But I will confirm this tomorow when I phone them.0 -
So just up put a proper ending to my reporting of this little saga. I spoke to the AA again yesterday. They said they could not, reinstate the policy, or could they match the original quote. When I asked if would be recorded as a cancellation, they made it very clear that under these circumstances they would never consider this a cancellation and to do so would be unethical.
So thanks for the warning, but as I hoped, its a non issue.
I went with MoreThan in the end via the Meerkats.0
