To configure your firewall the following ports must be opened, UDP 2727, UDP 4000 - 6000. If you have a BT Voyager 200, 1200 or 2000 modem then a Broadband Talk technical advisor can help configure this for you on 0800 028 3228. If not, you will need to refer to the documentation of your particular firewall for instructions.

not sure which belkin model you have, but it should be something like this..

    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Belkin/F5D7130UK/Lotus_Notes.htm

make sure you set the dropdown boxes to udp, and if you are still stuck, ring the 0800 number while you are on the screen, and ask for advice.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

That might be a problem. The only Firewall I have is Windows XP and trying to contact them on the phone is likely to be impossible.

Anyway, that hubbub reply (supposedly from BT themsleves) indicated a lot more (and differently numbered) windows than you say.

    Incoming: 32000- 36000.
    1st port: 5060.
    2nd port: 2727.
    3rd port: 49152- 49153.

    Outgoing: 30000 - 30002.
    1st port: 5060.
    2nd port: 2427.
    3rd port: 49152- 49153.
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

Your router also has a firewall and these ports need to be opened in there! Read the manual for your Belkin as they are not easily available online for others like us to see.

Manual? Remember I said at the start, "My Belkin 54g router was set up by the guy who supplied my PC and, although I tried to watch while he was doing the necessary with it, his fingers moved so fast, I lost it completely. No complaints there though - it works for my hardwired desktop and my wireless laptop."

I've got a leaflet with drawings of how to plug the wires in (in many languages) but no manual as such.

So, much as I really do apreciate your efforts to pass on your obvious expertese, we're heading into 'no speaky lady talk' territory here.

Not to worry. You've been very patient so thanks for your efforts.

The user manual should be with the router and is usually in the form of a .pdf on the CD supplied with it. Belkin is a manufacturer who do not make it easy for us to help you, as unlike most other manufacturers their manuals are not on-line to download.

Best of luck with it but don't give up yet!

Well, I think that decided me.

I found the CD (one of the few things I make sure of is to store all software-type things in the same place) and inserted it into my PC.

Read a few pages, understood none (jargon/acronym excess), decided not to bother and took the CD out.

Then I had to reboot the PC because the dear thing kept demanding I put the CD back and wouldn't let me do anything else unless I did!

    Freud was speaking to me.

It's very annoying because a second 'landline' would be handy on occasions but, as I get free eveing and weekend calls anyway, not much loss.

At least I've now got a second line for incoming calls - and a second geographic number I can give to banks, insurance companies etc so I never have to answer them!

You can look at the contents of the CD by pressing Shift when you insert it into the PC. This prevents the CD auto-running (launching their program) and you can then use Windoze Explore to look at the files on the CD. As you seem to have found the necessary ports that need to be enabled in your Belkin router to allow the VOIP to work, why don't you ring Belkin on their support number and ask them how to configure it?

I may try that but, having done so when I couldn't get certain websites after installing the 10v (before I realised I couldn't make outgoing phone calls either) - which involved me having to change a single setting in a box from something like 1480 to 1400 IIRC - so I know it'll be answered in India and not by anyone as well-spoken as Shulpa Shetty and I'll need a lie down, a cigarette and a coffee first.

Sorry people, me again - same problem (I gave up in January).

As you will have gathered, I'm a total numpty with regard to computers (I'm a user).

I now need to set up my Belkin router with a BT10v for BT Broadband Talk.

I've done the wiring according to spec and got the high-pitched dial tone and can receive incoming calls on the geographic number I had allocated. Even pressing 5 takes me to my standard landline's dial tone - so I must have the wiring right.

However, whenever I try to dial out, I get the unobtainable tone whatever I dial.

Previous advice suggests I need to open up Belkin ports:

    Incoming: 32000- 36000.
    1st port: 5060.
    2nd port: 2727.
    3rd port: 49152- 49153.

    Outgoing: 30000 - 30002.
    1st port: 5060.
    2nd port: 2427.
    3rd port: 49152- 49153.

Anyway, I've now managed to get into what looks like the right page in my Belkin's setup - but what to put where baffles me.

    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Belkin/F5D7130UK/Lotus_Notes.htm

I think the first number in each row (the last digit of the LAN IP address) should be '1' (because that's the last number of my router's IP address) but the rest has me baffled (I've tried and failed).

All the below have been baffled:

    TCP/UDP/BOTH?

32000 to 36000 appears to be 4000 addresses - how can I enter 4000 addresses?

    LAN Port?

    Public Port?

Is there anyone on here with better knowledge than me willing to help?

OK, different approach. I've admitted defeat with the Belkin and the BT 10V (well, I had a long ago if I'm honest) and, having had a nice £50 win on the Premium Bonds, I've decided to chuck both of them out and replace them with a modem/router into which I can just plug the spare DECT base station for BT Broadband Talk without the need for another adaptor (?) device like the 10V.

What I want to do is to be able to plug the desktop PC in directly (the plug looks like a large continental phone plug which I think is called an ethernet plug - it appears to communicate at 100mps anyway), do wireless at 54mps to my ancient but reliable laptop like I do/did with the Belkin and plug the DECT base station in.

Anyone care to recommend a device that does that lot?

Is the BT Voyager 2500V what I need?
