That really depends on the car and where its temperature sensors are located. We had a HG failure on a car that was known to send its temperature guage to the top. It never did with ours so its hit and miss what the gauge does.0 -
my last MR2 sent the gauge to the top when the gasket blew because it was over heating.
Although if the temp gauge appeared normal it might not be your head gasket, could just be an air lock somewhere.0 -
It's incredibly helpful when people ask for help with 'a car'.
Knowing the make and model would help no end, people have experience with certain faults on makes / models they've had in the past, and can better advise.0 -

Doesn't necessarily mean its going to do that with all cars. HG failure can mean several things happening inside the engine from the coolant being flushed out through the exhaust, getting into the combustion chamber (where it can actually cool the engine) or just mixing with the oil in the engine (making it into a creamy substance). While its true the temp gauge can be an indicator of a HG failure I would never say you can completely rely on it to diagnose a fault.
Best thing to do is check the coolant in the expansion tank and the oil in the filler cap. IF the coolant has oil in it or the oil is creamy coloured then you have a HG failure.mattyprice4004 wrote: »It's incredibly helpful when people ask for help with 'a car'.

Yup, I've pointed this out above but the op is silently ignoring giving us this information thinking that we'll come up with a miracle diagnosis. You can't help those who don't want to be helped.0 -

Coolant that splashed out all over the engine this morning looked creamy? Left a white residue too. I guess this might be rust or something.0 -
If its creamy (IE white/milky) then that is definitely a knackered head gasket as I've already said. Why you think its rust is beyond me.0
