How many calories needed?

Did I have the shock of my life this morning when I decided to weigh myself, depressing or what!!!!
Can anyone please tell me the best way to work out how many calories I should drop down to and from per day to loose weight. I have spent a long time this morning trying to find the answers to these simple question but everyone is different. I would like to know the 'normal womens calorie per day intake' amount first and then I think you deduct 500cal per day for every pound you want to loose.
Thanks. More of this:j and less of  from now

I'd really try and not get hung up on calories, if you're eating a healthy balanced diet and exercising you will lose the pounds.

If you have a phone that has apps, my fitness pal is quite good, it can also be used online. If you input your height, starting weight, how much you'd like to lose a week it will tell you how many calories a day you should be eating, and you can type in everything you eat, the food directory is pretty good, and has almost everything listed, so you then know how many you have left for the day. It also measures fat, carbs etc :)

    Hi ya

I can give you some information that I found on the net while looking what my teen son should be having.

1,250 for me (lady) 30g of fat max and no more than 12g of that saturated fat.

active teen boy 2,200 with max 55g fat no more than 17g saturated.

How right it is I dont know what sounds not to bad advice.

Also have a look at my www.fitnesspal you can log your cals there.
    good luck!

As Gilly has said...please DO NOT get caught up on calorie [STRIKE]obsessing[/STRIKE] counting. If you drop too many calories you won't lose weight at all.

I've been on a weight loss programme since September and apart from the first two weeks, the only weeks I have lost weight are the ones where I DON'T watch every little thing that I eat. The weeks I am strict with my diet I don't lose weight at all, there is most definitely such a thing as not eating enough.

I used to think I could just cut out a few packets of crisps and lose weight but that's not the case, I do three hours of Zumba a week and 2 sessions in the pool and it has taken me about 11 weeks to lose 9lbs. You have to be exercising to tone it up.

    Another vote for myfitnesspal too.

It's great - does all the calculations for you and its a free website and andriod and iphone app. I've lost 35lbs in 7 months using it.

Even if you don't have a phone that can use apps the website works in the same way and I tend to use that when I'm near the computer to record stuff. If I'm out and about I use the app.

Thank you for your posts, that has really helped me. My friend goes to Zumba classes and wants me to join her but you know what it's like, new girl syndrome aghhh. I am going to go on that site you have all given me as I got so confused with what my intake should be. I know I have to eat sensibly and cut the wine intake down, oh and yeh excercise. It's strange as I never sit down in the day, housework, shopping, school runs, errands, then cooking etc etc so it's obviously grabbing a biscuit here and there, no PROPER blood pumping excercise and now it's caught up with me. Thanks againX

Firstly, CONGRATULATIONS on your weight loss :T. That's what I want to loose, so it does work then. I'm excited now, bring it on.

I've done several diets in the past to lose some weight (always controlled by a doctor or nutricionist), and they've been around 1200 calories.
