I'm one of them. I paid £500 for a gas converted Cherokee which is the same price as a set of wheels and winter tyres. After winter I'll make my money back.
My regular drive is an MR2, if anything happens to it in the snow and i can't do the 70 mile round trip commute, then I'll lose wages and have to buy another car.
So the maths is; £500 on wheels and tyres + possible repairs to / replacement car (highly likely when my estate doesn't get gritted) + lost wages = £xxx. The Jeep has cost me 4 days wages (take home), gives me the benefit of having an extra car to reduce the chances of missing work, a hell of a better chance of getting anywhere in the snow and keeps one of my policies and NCD alive... So if that's being a clueless idiot, I'm more than happy to be one!

but it's fun though.. everytime you go round a corner or over a speed bump it's like shagging a blamonge

Look up Cinnamon Pass and Engineer Pass in Colorado and you'll see a place where it isn't fun. Especially not in the rain.

    :D

Just four days wages? - What the heck do you do for a living and where do I sign up?

Mid 40's? Ok that's a good salary but it's hardly mind bending is it? I'll be particularly unhappy if i'm not earning in that region in say ten years time

    Fixed that for you.

I'm an IT contractor, wages aren't as good as they were and still hit and miss depending on the contract.

For some reason on several mornings in the last few weeks I've found myself stuck behind (different) 4x4 drivers who seem to be terrified of them and only go over them at 3/4 mph.....Am I missing something?

The ability to apply eye-liner in a straight line? Probably makes the Peppa B****y Pig DVDs skip a few frames too. :rotfl:

photome - bet the speed limit is 30 - and I bet these drivers the OP complained about are doing a lot less than 30. Speed bumps are bad for the environment (extra fuel speeding up and slowing down) and should be banned! If you must 'calm traffic' (I hate that expression) there are better ways.

Just put loads of small bends in the road. Will have the useful side-effect that the duff drivers will either crash (so they're off the road) or will be frightened of all the work that needs to be done (so they're off that particular road). Leaving the road for the use of those able to drive properly.

Jase: You'd love it in the Welsh valleys then. Lots of twisty little single track lanes with a 60 limit.

A person I used to work with owned a fairly competent 4x4 (Suzuki Vitara) yet was too scared to drive over the curbstone separating our works car park from the next one after a forklift overturned in the snow and blocked the exit. Only tried it after I first demonstrated that it was possible in my car.

Anyway, they used to use the lanes until the first time they had to reverse for somebody coming the other way, and has since refused to use it, instead they sit in the queue on the M4 taking a longer and more expensive route home.

Aye, I've been to Wales a few times and love the rural roads there.

I live in rural NE England which is similar, though not quite as hardcore, and of course there's always Cumbria a few miles away (similar in many ways to the Welsh valleys) if I want to enjoy driving every once in a while :)
