4x4 Drivers Scared of Speed Bumps

On my way to work each morning I go down a road with those little square speed bumps that if you have a bit of co-ordination you can mostly avoid, so carry on over them at a decent speed (20mph or so).

For some reason on several mornings in the last few weeks I've found myself stuck behind (different) 4x4 drivers who seem to be terrified of them and only go over them at 3/4 mph.

Now I've never driven a 4x4, but I'd have thought if there was a vehicle suited to navigating a bit of road that isn't entirely flat, it would be a 4x4. Am I missing something?

  • no mate, they are being a little precious.

you can normally spot them a mile away, they have the biggest rims and lowest possible profile tyres. about as much use on a 4x4 as bringing a hot sponge pudding, covered in cream to gun fight.

You could give someone a nasty burn if it was a very hot jam sponge pudding.
And the cream could leave an unpleasant stain.
  • Could it be they are being driven by unconfident drivers who are driving SUVs to make up for their lack of confidence/skill?

  • With the square ones you can go right over them without touching the sides. There's a weird lump in the road near work and i belt over it in the Jeep because it's the nearest I've got to going off road so far.

True, but to be fair some of them weren't 'poser' 4x4, a few were tatty looking (due to age, no mud on them) normal sorts of 4x4s.

You've obviously got a good highways department then. Come this way I'll show you some roads in such a state you'll love going over them for some 4x4 experience!

I've got 85 profile tyres on my 4x4 and I take speed humps slowly. If I go over them fast I risk getting bounced out of the car.

Depends what the 4x4s were. My lightweight has a track so narrow that it won't straddle the square speed humps. Unless you go quite slowly you get a really bad jolt. I presume Defenders would be the same.
