As i said in the OP ..

Who are "they" ??. What part of Essex do you live in ?

I've actually got another bed coming this afternoon from the British Heart Foundation.

I'm going to ask the delivery drivers if they'd consider helping. If push comes to shove, I can go to £10 quid but that'll leave me £15 quid for food for the next 11 days, so i'd rather not if i can help it.

Have you tried speaking to the BHF for advice . they may know of some charitable organisation, who helps out with things like this. I was going to say ring help the aged but your name doesn't sound like you are old enough !

I don't think any charity would use it to be passed on, but you may find one that helps out with removals. Speak to a local volunteer organisation, they may know of someone.

Otherwise do what they do round here, dump it in the middle of the road and set light to it. Bonfire night all over again !

I thought local councils had a legal responsibility to help out. Mine doesn't charge a penny and you can get 5 things picked up at a time, but they log what they are, so you cant ring up next time and say the same item again. Belive me I tried, I had 8 single beds stored in my attic by previous owner as well as love letters from the 50's and 6 pairs of false teeth.

Good luck, don't take no for an answer with the council though
  • They actually rung me last night to say they'd cocked up and they couldn't deliver it because they couldn't identify which bed it was!.

They've said that when the manageress comes in later this morning she'll be able to tell them which one it is and they can deliver it.

When she phones, i'm going to say that i had a pickup arranged for my old bed which I had to cancel and now i'm not sure when I can arrange another one, so would she mind arranging for my old bed to be taken away for the inconvenience ?

I'm very much a member of the 'if you don't ask, you don't get' club y'see :)

Something to be aware of is that the council men will not come into the house to collect - you have to lug the item(s) down to your front door and heave them outside.

We too have a bed and mattress to get rid of, a superking and very heavy, and I've made enquiries and that's what I've been told by the council.
  • Could well be problem solved tomorrow. Spoke to the manager of the shop this morning and said i'd had a window of opportunity to have the bed picked up for disposal yesterday but that now obviously i've had to cancel it.

Manager said "well since it's us who's messed up, we'll gladly take it away for you" :)

Means I have to wait an extra day but if it does happen then i'll be very happy :D
  • when i cleared my dads flat after his death I arranged for the council to collect his divan bed and some other things.

Left them outside as told to and they were taken overnight. Someone obviously wanted them. Lost 10 pound which is all our council charges but hey ho at least someone got the benefit

Just seen that you have solved the problem with the charity shop
  • Just seen that you have solved the problem with the charity shop

well almost. i won't be happy until they've been and gone and taken the old bed so we'll see :)
  • Our student tenants left the most delapidated old sofa ever on the pedestrian refuge in the road outside the property. Several people sat on it for a rest as they waited for the lights to change, then someone nicked it!
  • I would try freecycle. Put the condition of the bed and where to collect from etc. Someone should collect it.

If all else fails I would chop it up into smaller managable sizes and fill your dads car to the brim and take it to the tip.
  • problem now resolved. after a slight hiccup where I had the wrong bed delivered initially, I now have the bed that was paid for in the shop and, because of the !!!!-up, the original pair of delivery drivers did indeed take my old bed away to dispose of it. job, as they say, done :)

    thanks for the replies.
