I might consider it if all else fails, although there's only one possible choice. My neighbour underneath me is housebound and can barely get around as it is, so he wouldn't be an option.
The woman who lives opposite might not be able to help but she might know someone who could. And I suppose considering i've sorted out her laptop a number of times, she kind of owes me a favour

I know you've said you've spoken to the council but have you checked on their website - just in case? Mine offers 2 collections of bulky items (up to 5 items per collection) per address per year on request for free to all residents of the boroughNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0

Man with van? You might find someone who's cheaper than the council charge if it's a quick half hour job.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Man with a van might be a possibility if I had any money. I really don't have any disposable income at all and no way of paying anyone back should they lend me any.
It really has to be free unfortunately.0 -
what are you going to sleep on when you get rid of it???As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.0

chop the frame up into say 3 ft bits, then it fit into any car, ready for the dump.
as for the matress, itll fit on a roof rack, so no van is required.
all you need now is someone to dump it for you.
surely you know a relative or a friend with a car? i bet a neighbour would dump it for a tenner. or even free.Get some gorm.0 -
I'm in Essex and they will take it away for free. I suppose they reason it's better than you dumping it by the side of the road."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

my wifes auntie lives in a council high rise block.
you are supposed to call the council and pay a fee to remove large itmes to the tip.
what really happens is that during the night, residents just leave large items next to the bin room.
the council have no option but to collect it all and dump it. this happens at least once per week.
god knows what its costing the taxpayers.Get some gorm.0 -
Actually I like the way my council (Tower Hamlets) deals with it... As mentioned before, all residents get 2 collections of up to 5 bulky items each year for free - all you have to do is ring a number or go to their website to arrange collection. Simple and easy, right? And it works, I've had them take stuff away that way too big for me to take to the local recycling centre. Apparently in the case of council estates and when people can't be bothered to arrange for their free collection and stuff just gets left, and because the council cannot trace the owner, they just charge the annual cost of removing the stuff back to the tenants - it's fair enough that way I think. Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0

As i said in the OP ..- I don't drive
- The nearest person to me who I could potentially call on (my dad) only has a small-ish car and his back is probably in a worse state than mine is.
- The only other person who i could potentially call on lives about 80 miles away and only has his works car, so would, invariably, need to hire a lorry.

Who are "they" ??. What part of Essex do you live in ?panchenlama wrote: »what are you going to sleep on when you get rid of it???
I've actually got another bed coming this afternoon from the British Heart Foundation.
I'm going to ask the delivery drivers if they'd consider helping. If push comes to shove, I can go to £10 quid but that'll leave me £15 quid for food for the next 11 days, so i'd rather not if i can help it.0
