Is this the first contact you've had about the debt ? Or have you received previous letters which you've not responded to ? Seems a bit odd that it's gone as far as a Debt Collection Agent without you knowing about it. If the Credit Card company have confirmed that the card matches one you were issued with, what do you mean by "the details do not match at all" ?0

Yes it is the first time I knew about the debt. I had sent for my credit report due to being turned down rang the credit card company, not about this but to find out if the card was till active, as I thought that I could be building up my credit record by using it and paying it off monthly waiting for my name to appear on the electoral register which is what I suspected the reason for being turned down. I have been living abroad. The letters must have gone to an old address but I was in credit at the time and did not get around to closing the account and forgot to change the address.
The card used in the transaction are not those of this card in question.0 -

I don't think you'll get any sympathy from your CC issuer, not notifying them of your change of address was quite a big mistake to make.
How could you have been in credit ? Was the purchase on a Credit or Debit card ? (i've assumed it's a credit card as you posted on the credit card board, maybe i'm wrong ?)
Your last sentence doesn't make sense, if your CC issuer has confirmed that the details do relate to you, how can you dispute this fact ?
I think the best thing for you to do is to write to your CC issuer stating the facts and wait for them to come back to you. You need their response before starting to look at your credit score. If the debt is yours, then your credit score won't change.0 -
Sounds more like a debit card than a credit card. That would explain why the numbers would change on the card.
Other than that, could you have left stashed away in a drawer at the previous address the credit card concerned? There are some pretty unscrupulous people who will run up debt for you firmly believing they would get away with it as it's not their name on the card.
My mum had paid off her credit card as she was retiring and cut it up. Then she moved house a year or two later and thought no more of it. Barclaycard sent her a new card to her old address when the old one expired. The scum-sucking pondlife who then lived in the house signed the back of the card and proceeded to run up £7k of debt in mum's name. Mum only found out about it when Barclaycard contacted her through her former employer. Long story short, the oxygen-wasting scum spent some time at Her Majesty's pleasure for it and the debt was removed from my mum's file as she could prove the fraud. Her only crime (at 65 years of age) was having forgotten to cancel the card she'd cleared in full two years before she moved.
Could you have left the old card at your previous address before you moved abroad?LBM July 2006. Debt free 01 Sept 12 .. :T

If the card was used by someone other than the OP, it's unlikely they would have used it to buy something from a retailer the OP had used in the past.0

If OP opted out of paper statements she still would have had access to online ones would she not or has she also changed her e-mail address?0

I had not used the mbna card for years and there was a small amount left on it by way of overpayment. During all the arrangements of emigrating, I forgot all about the card but kept it with me and dont thunk it has been used by anyone else. I have an illness which affects my memory and concentration. Apparently, I used it to make a purchase in error instead of using my debit card after returned to the UK and as I was now at a different address and not checking the account online, it remained unpaid and into the hands of debt recoverers. The company I apparently bought from and I think they are probably right tell me that the card details they have are not the same ones as the ones on the card. I do not recognise the details especially the 2016 expiry date.
????
The credit card had a different address on it than the one I ordered from. Sorry thats not very clear. The items ordered were delivered to the house I lived in when I returned from abroad and the address apparently that was held on the credit card but the address on the mbna card is the address held before I emigrated.
I am not disputing the purchase now - it looks like I made it and I will pay it but I cant make any sense of the card details they say they have that I apparently ordered from as they are not the mbna card details, the card in my hand.0
