No idea where to start when looking to change provider

Options
Im looking to get away from TalkTalk for my phone/internet as Ive had nothing but hassle off them for a long time now - i was a prev. tiscalli customer and had no probs with them but now talk talk have taken over its a different matter...

anyway without too many details Im currently paying

£13.80 line rental
£7.14 evening & w/end add on
£4.09 anytime talk??
£4.50 non DD fee as I refuse to let them have access to my account anymore....long story .....

= £29.53 of my bill each month is just charges!!! (this month alone theres only £3 worth of calls....(would prob be about £10 without the free calls as I hardly use my landline)

I need to reduce this as I barely use my landline & just really want wireless internet

Im pretty sure Im paying way over the odds ....anyone have any advice??

Many thanks in advance

(ps dont have sky & not an O2 customer so cant go via their packages)

First thing to do is to put your telephone number into samknows exchange search.
    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search

This will list which LLU ISPs are available at your exchange.

PS You don't have to be a Sky TV subscriber to get Sky broadband talk and line rental.

    http://www.sky.com/shop/broadband-talk/broadband-options/broadband-only/

Let us know what the result is and we can proceed.

If you hardly use the phone, why on earth are you adding on a £4.09 Anytime option? Drop that and you've saved an immediate £49.08pa.
And if you do use Anytime, why are you still clocking up £3 worth of exclusive calls? If these are to mobiles, use your inclusive moblle minutes instead. Another £36 saved.
And refusing DD is costing you another £54.
    Total annual saving £139.08 so far-that's £11.59pm.
PS: Nor do you have to be an O2 mobile customer to use O2 phone and broadband-but it does reduce the price by £5p if you can register a mobile number-which does not have to be your own.

the anytime bill is for 0845 numbers (my bank) & a few mobile numbers only....

I refused the DD as for months ive been battling to get them to change is as my salary date changed but they refused which meant it was taking my TT money the week before I got paid so it bounced on several occassions - with both my bank charging me AND TT charging me - after numerous calls to TT & god knows how many hours on hold Ive eventually managed to get them to reimburse the charges as ive tried to change it on many occassions - to be told it could be done one month, then it didnt happen, told by someone else it coudnt be done but didnt know why, then to be told it def cant be done as im a historical tiscalli customer ....codswallop - so only option i had to was cancel it & pay over the phone each month, so which they charge me 4.50 for THEIR inability to change a DD date!! grrrrr

def going to cancel the anytime as no idea even what that is or how it differs from the evening & weekend - surely it cancels the latter out?? if so why do i still have both?? never asked for the anytime i dont think....

'Anytime' means landline (non premium) numbers are all inclusive 24/7. 'E&W' means the same, but only inclusive at weekends and after 7pm weekdays. If you don't make more than £4.09 of daytime calls per month, it's not worth having.
Or if it makes it easier, just upgrade to one of the current (much cheaper) TT tariffs, such as Essentials.
Your LLU options are 02 or Sky-good.

    I concur with Mr Mac.

  • Hope you don't go through what I have recently. I had the same sort of problems with talk talk so tried to move to plusnet to save a couple of pounds a month. Wish I hadn't bothered. 3 1/2 weeks after the line change they got my internet up from 156kbps to 2.5 meg. That took over 5 hrs of calls and a day off work for an engineer to visit. (No problems at my house it was at the exchange). Now the speed's not as good as talktalk.
The first bill came in higher than was expected due to being misled over 0845 and 0870 calls.
Now i can't leave without paying £65 (which includes a router that doesn't work as well as my old d-link).
oh and forget dial up customer service-take over 20 min to be answered and then thats not a good experience.
Like you I had a good time with tiscali.
So good luck with the change I hope you have a better time than I am.

Assuming that you are still in your 12m minimum term contract and wish to break it, why is that unreasonable?

Sorry, do you mind if I also ask similar question here? I'm with TT for phone and broadband and considering moving. I get very similar results from using samknows, except in the LLU operator presence the only ones enabled are AOL, Sky, TalkTalk and Tiscali.
I already am a Sky customer - if I wanted to take their broadband too would I have do anything with my phone line?
What about if I wanted BT - do I have to pay a reconnection fee to BT? Years ago we had to pay almost £90 to get reconnected in a property where the line physically existed but had been terminated by previous property owner

For Sky the theory goes something like this - "Currently if you have TalkTalk LLU .... and wish to migrate to Sky Talk and Broadband we would need to place an order for your Telephone service (including a number porting request should you wish to keep your existing number) and allow this to complete so that we take ownership of the line.
Once the line transfers over to Sky Talk and is active we would then be able to place an order for Sky Broadband on your line. There should be no cost for this transfer as it is free however you may lose your broadband service with TalkTalk at the time the we take over your line." http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Broadband-Ordering/TalkTalk-to-Sky-switch-broadband-issues/td-p/13813

In practice very much prone to error.

For BT it's straightforward enough under Return To Donor although this too can be problematic but free to do at present.
