Hi guys
we are refurbishing bathroom in our new house.
So far we have taken out partition wall between bathroom and WC. The wall went all the way up to the loft so now we have 10cm gap in the ceiling with view into the attic.
We need to do following:
- new ceiling done (shall we just board over existing, seems easier and less messy)
- walls to be skimmed.
- replace bath, sink and WC.
- Tile around the bath.
- Buy underfloor heating in the roll and put it down ourselves and install laminate floor.

My question is, in what order should be those works carried out?

We are DYI beginners unsure how to proceed, want to do ourselves as much as we can..

Advise will be much appreciated.

  • We are wondering if the plastering is done when old sink and WC is out?
How long after plastering can you put new suite in?

When our bathroom was done during the summer, the builders did it in the following order (from bare bricks):

    remove most of floorboards
    board ceiling & skim
    lay piping underfloor
    sink cabling into walls
    skim walls
lay marine ply boarding on floor
    tile walls
    fit shower
    tile shower & wet-area
finish tiling walls (down to a batten marking edge of bath - you don't want to pay for tiles under & behind the bath where you won't see them ;))
    fit basin
    fit bath
    tile floor
    fit loo (wall-mounted)
    grout
    seal bath & basin

Just one question, did they remove your old suite (WC,sink, bath) before they started?
As we have only 1 bathroom and WC in the house, we are trying to work it out so we are not without bath for too long..

Instead of tiling think about Selkie Board, Bushboard or Wetwall.

We choose mainly Selkie Board but got Bushboard Nuance (double the price of Selkie).

I was slighty concerened it would look a little industrial but we are very pleased, easy to clean and no grout to go mouldy.

  • Hi I am currently putting in a new bathroom, and firstly we stripped off all tiles, they were floor to celling! then had everything pulled out one night except loo, it was just loosen from the wall, following morning had all walls skimmed, next day all put back! So only without bath for one night, couldnt be without loo with 2 kids. Hopefully tomorrow a week later tiles back on and on the weekend false celling - black cladding with sparklie bits and spotlights to go in! Cant wait till its done!

You could always hire a portapotty while the loo is out of action. And local swimming baths will presumably have a shower.

They took out the basin & bath fairly early and left the loo as long as they could but always put it back at night as we are the same, only one bathroom & loo! We were redesigning, adding a shower area & swapping everything around so it took a little while.

Why not ask friends or neighbours if you can have a quick shower? Or go to your local sports centre (I did!) or gym? also, if you can be a non-splashy bather, you will be able to have a bath when it's in before grouting...but not if you're wanting a shower or are very splashy!

replace the ceiling for starters plasterboard is cheap,
and skimming ceilings is not rocket science,

its messy but plasterboard on top of plasterboard is a NO NO

skim the walls at the same time,
    ceiling first,
clean/scrape crap off walls then pva and skim,
use board finish for boards and wall finish for walls,
    £ 4 a bag b and q
you will need skrim cloth for the ceiling joints,
use proper skrim cloth not that new stick on stuff,
trowel a stripe of board finish on the ceiling joints then trowel, the cloth skrim cloth over the joints, then start skimming, the ceiling let the first coat go off for half an hour, then apply second coat, wet your trowel then finish the skim smooth,
    whisk your plaster in a very deep bucket £ 10 b and q ...with a skimming whisk £ 5 b and q ... to a medium gravy consistency,hawk £10 ragni skimming trowel £5 b and q

fit bath,on framework, and seal with silicon then tile,
tighten all four legs fairly tight, but only tighten middle leg hand tight, use masking tape 5mm onto bath edge and 5mm onto tiles,
gun apply silicon bead smooth with soapy finger, then remove masking tape straight after,

fit basin and pedastal, and loo,

    remove basin pedastal and loo,

    fit laminate,

replace basin and pedestal and loo,
