slow pc

This got slow a week or so ago and hasnt improved. When I go into the wireless connections in my control panel it always sits at between 19-26mbps. It used to be 65. Is this anything I can do or is it in the phone line?

The 19-24mbps is the speed of the wireless link between your PC and router. If this has dropped it suggests that you are now getting interference e.g. another wireless network on the same channel. You could try using inSSIDER here to see what channels are in use locally and then change your router channel to a different channel well away from any others in use.

What broadband speed do you get here?

If your PC is running slow rather than the wireless link, then you have a different problem and it's not your phone line if your broadband speed is OK.

First link says download speed 6.23 and upload .15 ? And I downloaded inSSider and there's only me on it
So it def cant be the cabling for the sky dish ? I know I sound mad but I dono anything about this stuff and if you dont ask then you never find out!

So your broadband speed is what you would expect e.g. in line with what you pay for? and is not being affected by the lower wireless link speed which is far greater. I can't really comment on the cabling for your Sky dish but it should not affect your wireless connection.

Are you saying that your PC is slow or internet browsing is slow?

Its more the internet speed is low. Husband just took the ethernet cable out and now its at 65mbps instead of 19. Does that make sense? I dono why it was in !

Your speedtest download result was 6.23 mb/s which should be fine for surfing the net and streaming video etc.

I don't understand why you would have both wireless and Ethernet connected at the same time? Use the Ethernet cable if it is convenient and disconnect the wireless link - use one or the other not both.

If your speedtest is 6.23Mbps then you are probably on a 'up to' 8Mbps service-so that's fine.
Your wireless speed is (theoretically) is up to 56Mbps. But as long as it runs faster than the llne speed, it doesn't matter, as the signal can only be as fast as the slowest part of the path.
Unless you are on a fibre service (VM cable or BT Infinity), the weakest link is always going to be the line speed.

This is because you've been causing a probable conflict between the two network adapters in the laptop - they are designed to be used either wifi adapter/or ethernet adapter, and in a lot of cases trying to use both together will have exactly the effect you described with your wifi connection. Some lappys will disable the wifi if you have an ethernet cable plugged in...using both won't double your broadband speed

when you run inSSider, what signal strength are you getting?

I didnt know the cable was in - must've been the OH, he's batty. I dono how to find speed on inSSIDer, where wil I see that? I'm up in the hills - no cable, no anything fancy. The exchange is a small hut in a field with sheep scratching their bums on it

Why use wireless if you can use the Ethernet cable? The problem is in your property, nothing to do with the "small hut in a field with sheep scratching their bums on it"

If the laptop is sitting next to the router and does not have to be mobile, use ethernet. Wireless is pointless unless the router is remote from the laptop, or if you need mobility.
