Help! What's the Best Phone/Deal for a 10 year old?

Comments

  • i think its too young to have a phone wot do they need it for exactly?

anyway if you do get a basic cheap payg and top it up for emergencies only i dont see why they should text theyre friends at that age
    What goes around-comes around
  • Tesco have capped contracts which are ideal for children. There is also Giff-Gaff and a few other low cost alternatives.

Don't be put off by the negative remarks about children and phones.

Place those two words together on any forum and you will receive ill-informed comments such as 'I wouldn't do that and children don't deserve phones'.

I would suggest a nice juicy Samsung Galaxy with a 1000 mins, 20,000 texts and a 40 GB contract, so your ten year old can experience technology and be in touch with the world.

My hat goes of to you. Buy that child a phone !!!! :D

Why not? My 11yo sends me texts me all the time when eg. she's away at team sport and, besides, she has much better grammar then you?
Irony eh? Gotta love it ....

In a way I suppose you are right. The child shouldn't exceed those limits and the amount they will learn from a Samsung Galaxy will be immense.

Madness, £10 a month, what does a ten year old spend it on
£10 = 40mins per month (25p per min) on payg thats WHY I suggested the CAPPED Tesco contract at £7.50.

I live in the real world, where modern technology is part of growing up, its even part of school life now, ipads, ipods, laptops, gps devices, all part of the classroom, so a 10yr old wanting a cheap/basic phone doesn't seem like a great big deal to me, personally I feel happier that my 10yr old has their phone with them whilst out with friends, that way I always know exactly where she is and I can get hold of her if needed.

I'm sure the Newbie OP will be glad of all your kind and welcoming comments, they didn't ask if it was right or wrong for their child to have a mobile, they asked if anyone could reccommend a phone or deal.

Mobile calls are 6p/minute with iCardmobile...£10 will get 166 minutes. Texts are a bit high so GiffGaff might be the better choice with unlimited texts for £5 and calls at 10p.

I am with giffgaff and I think one of their goodybags would probably do enough. No matter how responsible a 10 year old is, it can be incredibly easy to go over and incur massive bills by phoning a premium number. If you have a goodybag on giffgaff you can't phone a premium number unless you have credit as well. You also get free giffgaff to giffgaff calls provided you have topped up or bought a goodybag in the previous 3 months.

There are a lot of people on the giffgaff community forum who have ordered sims for their children and generally the comments seem to be good. It's not necessarily the right network for everyone but it's worth spending a bit of time on the forum to see what you think.

Otherwise a capped contract is good idea.

    EDIT

I just saw bevvy's post about the Tesco's capped contract. I'm tempted by that myself. Well done on such a good find :T

Very strange comment... no one has been rude / abusive on here, just given very good advice. How many threads have we seen over the years "oh my god, my 10 year old has run up a £500 mobile bill"

Ok so the OP might not have specifically asked if it was a good idea but as an example... if someone asked who the best payday loan company is, am I not allowed to say that they shouldn't use any and should consider alternate means instead.

Some people are far too quick to find offense where there is none these days... hopefully the OP is not one of them.
A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A

If you find my posts useful, "pay it forward" and help someone else out, that's how places like MSE can be so successful.
  • Thanks for the advice people.
Was looking to get my 12 year old her 1st phone - to ease my mind really as it's an hour's journey to school each way and it's getting dark now.

Going to try a giffgaff sim (through quidco) and see how it goes.
