Will Virgn Mobile Sim card work in I Phone 3GS?

My contract with T-mobile is at its end and i have seen some fantastic sim only paid monthly deals with virgin!
However I am very hesitant to purchase as reading forums similar to this it isnt clear whether it will actually work or not in my iphone 3gs. Will someone please set the record straight for me please!!!!!!!!
