Is he on the paediatric movicol? If so it's within 12 hours. It's the adult stuff that's within 6 hours.
The daily number of sachets should be taken in divided doses, all consumed within a 12 hour period.

i think this thread is going really well, its reasurring that their are other people that also have these problems and you are not alone, as sometimes at times it can feel very lonely as no one really talks about it.

Thanks Jackie, I found that too but wanted to check before messing things up. :)

Can I ask you all what drinks you pop the sachets into?

I've been using apple and orange juice with 2 sachets in each time.

I thought it had to be mixed with water. I might be wrong but that's what the doctor told me. He said I could add diluting juice, which I do. I make sure the Movicol is dissolved before I add the squash. I do it in a big tumbler with water, 2 sachets at a time, and she drinks it through the straw.

It tells you on the instructions how much water you ideally need to mix one sachet in. You need plenty of water as it's water which softens the stool.

Had a look and not that much water is needed actually. My daughter is on the adult Movicol and that has to be mixed in double the amount. You don't need to be exact. I would say that it the least amount of water you need. I was told it doesn't matter if it's more.
Each sachet should be dissolved in 62.5 ml (quarter of a glass) of water. The correct number of sachets may be reconstituted in advance and kept covered and refrigerated for up to 24 hours. For example, for use in faecal impaction, 12 sachets can be made up into 750 ml of water.

Mixing it with fruit juice might be okay - but I honestly don't know. You could phone your pharmacist and ask? If it was me and he preferred it in fruit juice, i'd probably disolve it in the amount of water recommended, and then top it up with the fruit juice. As long as he's drinking it all it won't be a problem.
  • My 8 yo son has had problems with his bowels since he was born, he has never been faecally continent and has been under the paediatrician for an ectopic thyroid since birth. he is nearly 9 now and is starting to get incredibly embarrassed and self conscious about it, he is on movicol, 2 sachets a day which is keeping him regular as such but he rarely gets to the toilet and does it in his underwear almost every day, he is not loose but it is incredibly smelly, he was last at the hospital a couple of weeks ago and the doc said he wasn't constipated but this is causing immense problems. He has no anxiety over going to the toilet and will go for a wee fine, he just says he doesn't get the sensation he needs to go until the last minute and he can't hold it.

I'm getting to the end of my tether with it if I'm honest, it's started causing issues at school as other kids are noticing and I just don't know what to do anymore, we are back at the hospital in April and I'm going to do a food and bowel diary before we go for a month or so to see what they think

I have had constipation problems as an adult, and it's not pleasant! I am so sorry for everyone on this thread - witnessing the pain and embarrassment of your children and not being able to make it go away must be terrible!

When trying to sort myself out I came upon this website: gutsense.org . It's a bit controversial regarding fibre, but the advice on building up the intestinal flora and taking vitamin C was very useful for me. Hopefully some others will find useful info on there.

Wow i am so surprised at the amount of people that have a child/or have suffered with it themselves, it just goes to show that it is a quite a common problem but people don't really talk about it in real life, though i have found out that one of my friends children has it so its nice to have someone to talk about. I am glad i started this thread, there was times when it was so bad i did feel like the only person in the world to have a child that suffers with it and my dd2 used to think she was the only girl to have these problems bless her, but since my friends child has come out that she has it i told dd2 and explained that she isn't the only one and just some children (even adults) have trouble going to the loo at times, i think its definatly made her feel better! And me!

    Oh lord...:o

Poor DS has been running to the toilet every hour or so and has gone through 4 toilet rolls in 3 days.

I know it's TMI, but is this amount of runniness normal?

He said this morning that a big piece came out, which I'm hoping is the blockage - this is the 1st time that anything solid has come out since he's been on the sachets.

I've tried ringing the hospital but his doc is still on holiday, as I'd like reassurance that this runniness will eventually stop and a 'proper' poo will eventually arrive.

It just seems to me to be a paradox that he will get a firm poo when on such a high dose of movicol.

(I'm full of a cold, been up most of the night coughing, slept on the sofa, DS threw up in the night, I'm feeling sorry for him and myself and I'm feeling in need of reassurrance :( )
