toilet woos

Hi just thought thought i would post on here to see if anyone else has a child that suffers from impaction? My DD2 has suffered with it since about the age of 3 and has been on movical sahets (she is 7 now) since. Just wondering really if anyone else has a child go through it and ways of dealing with it and when does it start to get better? I know it is quite a hush hush subject and probably more people suffer with it than you would realise.

  • DS1 suffered for a while a while back. tbh 4 years is a long long time to be on movicol. has the dr suggested weaning her off the med yet? after about 6 months DS had his reduced gradually then came off it all together. he went back on it a year later for another 6 months and has been fine ever since.

My 8 year old has been on movicol for 5years, he doesn't need it every day now probably a sachet every 2-3 days, he has a good diet and plenty of fluids, if he doesn't drink plenty the situation does get worse.

Don't worry about how long he is on movicol I know of people that have been on it for years.

Our littl'un (2 years old) started on Movicol two months ago, and we've been warned that he could need to be on them for quite a long time. I think we've worked out that every 3-4 days is keeping him regular just now.

Agreed that good hydration helps, if they can tolerate warmed water that's even better. If your child's diet has sufficient bulk and fluids the cause of the problem is probably "holding on" (they may be embarrassed, fear the "splash" or associate defecating with pain - but of course if they get into that habit it just becomes more painful).

I would suggest you wake them up early and sit them on the toilet after breakfast until they have done something, to get them into a regular habit. A few soft (stoned) prunes before bed should also help.

It's not, it's a short-term remedy to get things moving again whilst trying other methods.

  • Give them a party blower!
DD had some issues with nausea resulting from reluctance to poo, she had lactulose and lots of dried fruit and it's resolved itself.
DS recently had some issues with constipation and I'd read a tip about letting them blow up a balloon while on the loo, as it relaxes the pelvic floor; tried party blowers and it's worked! He's gone from going twice a week to every day and loves it, as he has his special blower. The bonus is that I know he's pooing as I can hear the toot ;)
