Windows Vista... unbelievable prices

I remeber posting a thread a few weeks ago about where the the best price for vista was and i decided to check again seeing as its pretty much release time.

I checked ebuyer and couldnt beleive how cheap it was

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/search/index.html?rb=24822393265&strSearch=&bolShowAll=true&intStoreID=6&intCatID=107&intSubcatUID=1122&intMfrID=93&strExtendedSearch=+vista&intPage=2&bolShowAll=true&strOrderDir=descending&intPage=1

I was especially interested in Ultimate edition for £115

Anyway two questions..

Does system builder software install like a normal commerical one. It's just the license is different right.

Second i have Athlon AMd 64 3400+ that means i should be buying the 64bit version as it takes advantage of my processor yes??

    1. with XP OEM (system builder version), i think (i cant be too sure, though!) it didnt come with system restore and you have to buy a bit of hardware to get it

    2. if you buy the 32 bit version, it won't take advantage of the 64bit processor. so yes go for the 64 bit version as it will take advantage of your processor
  • Although there are limited advantages to buying vista, especially atm if you play games

I think you'll find the 32-bit version a much better choice - for now, & probably quite some time in the future as well - read this article: Vista: Should I Install 64-bit or 32-bit Version? (x64 vs x86). G
  • Hi
firstly the win xp oem does have system restore as I have it
    secondly
I beta tested the 32 and 64 bit versions of vista premium the only difference I could find was the 64bit had alot more browsers,
    thirdly
I dont see why someone would want to buy the full retail boxed version when you can get the oem version for so much cheaper and the licence is no different you still get a coa with xp for the oem version.
    fourthly
I am going to buy the oem version myself next year why wait a year
1 the price will probably come down some
2 there will have ironed out alot of glitchishes
3 it will probably come with sp1/2
4 its my sons 21st this year so my money is going on him this year
5 I will be able to afford to up-grade somethings for vista.
    like the HD/ GC/ CPU

Pls be nice to all MSer's

    Hi
firstly the win xp oem does have system restore as I have it

sorry, i meant the microsoft backup thing
  • The OEM version is much cheaper because you can only install it one computer. Once you have activated it it will need reactivating (possibly over the phone) when you change certain pieces of hardware because it thinks you are trying to install on a different machine. If you replaced the motherboard for example it would be very difficult to convince Microsoft you weren't installing Vista on a different PC. you would have ring them up and tell them your motherboard broke or something.

The full version doesn't have this limitation. you can still only install it on one PC at once BUT you can move it between PCs if you wish.

Having said that the OEM version is around 1/3rd of the price of the full version so as long as you aren't changing PCs more than 3 times its the cheaper option. I think you have to buy it with some hardware but I think some places will sell it you with a £2 mouse.

    Hope this helps.
  • Hi,
    I have just ordered the free Vista upgrade {due to buying a new laptop in January}

Is that right that i will only receive the 32bit version. The laptop has xp media 2005 installed. I didnt really understand what i was doing, but have i ordered the right thing?
I have sent a copy of my receipt as per reply email request, and also upfront payment via cc (although they dont take the money until dispatch)

  • Hi,
I dont know tbh. Is that just the normal upgrade then the 32 bit. Is this what others are applying for?
My laptop is the gateway mx6933b from play.
    Cheers
  • The Gateway mx6933b runs with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

You need the 32 bit version.

Although, personally I think your mad to upgrade to Vista - what you have is fine. It ain't goina get any better with Vista.

Why are you looking to upgrade? What do you expect thats different ?
