TESCO BANK 24/7 internet access

Up till June 2011 i had 24/7 access to the savings accounts for years.
Tesco Bank brought in a new security system which to date cannot restore the 24/7 access.Being disabled, almost house bound i have no use for a mobile phone nor have one .They insist on one to text me. I now get a use once only pin by post takes 6 days .
over the phone they help me reregister the savings account access which disappears when the computor is switched off.
I wrote to their complaints department over 40 days ago getting replies but no action.Since writing to the CEO SAVINGS in October A NEW EXECUTIVE COMLAINTS DEPT has stepped in and say this is a new complaint and i cannot go to the ombudsman .I has also been told over the phone their IT department can do no more and the fault is my computor.I rely heavily on internet banking and financial matters which also have equally strict security measures readily available 24/7 and no problems for years.
My wife wishes to stay with the bank.
am i the only one in the country having this problem and has anyone got ideas how to sort the impass out ?

From memory (it's been a little while since I worked in a bank), if your complaint is of the same nature, then the timescales for referring to the FOS are still 8 weeks from the original complaint. I'd recommend querying with the FOS to make sure.
    2. ask us to look at your complaint

If you're not happy with how the business has dealt with your complaint, you can ask us to look into it for you. But the business you're unhappy with has eight weeks to look into your complaint first – before we can investigate your case.
You will need to fill in our complaint form – so that we know your details. We can help you do this (phone us on 0300 123 9 123 or 0800 023 4567). Or you can download the form below.

Well I for one am having difficulty understanding what you are on about

Are you saying that you have internet access 23 hours a day? 10 hours a day? or what?

Or are you saying you really don't have it at all because whilst it's there 24x7 you need a mobile phone as well to operate it?

If the latter your only option is to change banks (hint - not to Santander). If your wife wants to stay - let her. Just have two accounts.

I doubt if the Ombudsman will be that interested. You could have a mobile phone but choose not to. You have to live with the consequences of that (understandable) decision.
  • IIRC, the tesco system can remember your usual computer, and it is only if you are using a new computer (eg in an internet cafe) that it needs to text you a one-time password. [I fell foul of this when I updated my computer and it changed identity, so that tesco needed to re-authenticate - I hadn't registered my mobile number and had to phone up.]

I believe there are ways to receive SMS messages without a mobile phone. Can they be delivered to a normal landline (where they are read out) ? Or I think there are (paid) services to receive SMS as email or something.
  • You can get landline phones that send and receive SMS texts. We have a BT landline and a Panasonic cordless phone and can send and receive texts free of charge with our call bundle. Hopefully this could be the solution.

Despite the fact that landline phones can handle texts, most banks I've dealt with (not sure about Tesco) seem to insist on a mobile number. I would imagine they perceive it as being more secure, as a landline phone is often shared by other people (though of course that could also be the case with a mobile).

I know you say you have no use for a mobile phone, but you can get one for as little as £7.49. You may find it useful.

You can get virtual mobile numbers which allow texts to be received online but I don't think there are any providers that offer this free.

Are you using Internet Explorer? I get what appear to be the same problems - Tesco Bank doesn't recognise the PC, time after time. They're advising people to use Chrome!

I had a similar issue with Yorkshire Building Society who insisted that I needed a mobile phone number to allow withdrawals. My problem is that I get virtually no signal at my home address so my mobile is not reliable. After phoning their Customer Services they have accepted my home phone number for confirmation purposes.:T

Not that I'm aware of. I did talk to Tesco about this, and they admit that there are problems with IE - they're actually advising people to use Chrome because it works better!
