Out of date medication sold!

Couple of weeks ago I bought couple of packs of Beechams all in one at my local Sainsbury's. As we haven't used them, I was about to put them back in the cupboard and noticed that one of them expired in August 2011 (I bought it in October 2011) and the other packet expires in November 2011. In store, someone has obviously noticed it and have now reduced the November batch and the August ones are not there any longer, but they are denying any knowledge of it. As I have no receipt customer services were not interested and not in the slightest conserned about other customers out there who are unaware that they have bought out of date medication which can be harmful. I did call their head office to inform them of the incident. Does anybody know if supermarkets can really sell out of date stuff and not accept any responsibility if you haven't got the receipt? Thanks.

If you don't have the receipt or any other proof that you bought them there, then there is nothing they can do.
And to say that some out of date Beechams could be harmful is overstating the case ridiculously. Won't somebody think of the children ?

I can't find (in a quick search) anything that says medicines past their sell-by date are harmful. Reduced effectiveness perhaps, but not harmful. Certainly not for over-the-counter medicines. (There are different rules for prescription-only medicines).

Is it a "use by" or a "best before" date?

Beechams all in one is just plain Paracetomol with a flavor

lemsips a simple lemon flavour with Paracetomol.

a couple months over will not do any harm

Just use them for goodness sake, if these things worry you so much check more carefully when you buy them.

You have no receipt an you could have bought them anywhere what do you expect?
  • Sorry you have received such a response for your first post Mili !

Unfortunately they can have Teflon shoulders without proof of when and where bought, annoying though it is

Im still sipping from a bottle of cough medicine that went out in 2008. Granted it's probably not as effective but I'm still alive ;)

I'd just use them if it were me, but I'm the type that doesn't pay sell by dates much heed.

I'm terrible for using way out of date medicine.

last year i had a very bad infection, and it would be days before i got to see the gp.

i took the tablets i had which were not even as strong as what the gp would of given me, worked fine and i was better in days.. gp did confirm i had an infection (reacurring one) medicine was about 4 years out of date.

I keep thinking i should clear out the medicine box, but keep forgetting.
