Somewhere a bit different for NYE

I have tried searching this but all the topics seem to be about NYE in London.
Me and my OH, and maybe a few friends, are thinking of going away for NYE, just one night away.
I've looked for hotels in all the obvious places, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle etc and everything is really expensive.
Has anyone any other ideas of somewhere less obvious were we might be able to grab a bargain?
We're in East Yorks so anywhere within a couple of hours drive/train journey (got a few train vouchers that we could do with using up).
Thanks

smaller citys can be good for NYE as there is a more central based series of events without cris crossing routes . Think chester/preston/hull. Liverpool is a fantastic place to have NYE early on and then it goes very quiet around 10 oclock as no one really lives there so every one leaves on public transport without paying often £50 to get home after 1am by taxi (normally costs around 15/20) what about Dundee/ Carlise:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Really good point about taxis, didn't think about that.
I really like the sound of Chester!
I looked up some of the little lodges, spending the night in the middle of nowhere sounds fab, but they are very pricey!0 -
are you looking for hotel with gala dinner and entertainment etc, in which case some cities like Chester will be expensive, or more like accommodation and a night out on the town, in which case, i would have a look at premier inn in some of the towns and cities within reach - remembering the weather might be bad, dont go too far from home!0

Not the gala dinner option! We're a young couple so that's a big no no. Just somewhere we can have a nice meal and go out for a few drinks and dancing afterwards. I've tried looking through Travelodge and Premier Inn but I am not really getting anywhere.
I do really like the idea of a lodge or cottage somewhere though.0 -
Edinburgh and Glasgow are great for New Year but you may have left it a bit late. Birmingham has fireworks and bands in Centenary Square as well as the clubs nearby0

matlock, derbyshire - small rural town with cosy pubs and bed and breakfast accomm a short walk from town centre....or a taxi into a more rural accommodation spot?
firework display normally at midnight in the town...
its a touristy area so lots of independent restaurants and bars in town centre and a few with downstairs dance floors that will be open till late .. but only a small town so loads of accommodation either a short taxi or a short walk away depending on how rural you want to be..
eg i live 15 mins walk from the town (although all up hill!) but surrounded by cow fields
so you have it all - restaurant, then cozy pub with log fires, or pub crawl around the town, out into the park for 12 to watch fireworks and then down to the bars to dance for a few hours, then either walk or taxi to a romantic cottage!

How about Bath ? Gorgeous city, lots of good food places, and though not the busiest of nightlife, there are still places with NYeve nights to go out to0

have a look at cottages4u website very nice accomadation not cheap but if few coulples splitting the bill works out value for what you get, the cottages are that nice you might decide to go out the pub in day back to cottage on night for your own party bubbly and log fires
tip- if your not fussed where to go the prices drop the closer to the date you leave it,0
