Help - debt from Dubai being chased

Irrespective of the 'status' of this alleged debt, I doubt very much that a 'photocopy of a letter from an Indian dca in Dubai would constitute any authority whatsoever for a UK Debt Collection Agency to pursue the debt.
I am a little confused as to where this debt originated - if, as I suspect, it is a debt with a Dubai Bank, then I am fairly sure that it can not be pursued through the UK Courts.
Helllo Rog 2/ or anyone that can help??? - i know this forum is a few years old but wondered if you could help me? I have started receiving letters from CCI legal about a dubai debt- I returned from Dubai in June 2009 and this is the first written contact I have had??
obviously it isnt the 6 years yet but what legal action (if any) can they take? what reply in writing should i them? (again if any)
Their letter states they can start legal proceedings and in the event og judgement/decree in their clients favour I will have to pay court fees etc...HELP!!
Thanks!!

If the debt is a debt run up in dubai then it is subject to the laws of the united arab emirates. Which might well not have a legal period after which a debt becomes statute barred. I am unaware of any reciprical agreements between the UK and UAE in relation to debt collection - and if there are none then you could not be taken to court in the UK for this debt.
They may well be able to take you to court in dubai over this debt (they may already have done so), if you don't intend to return there its unlikely to be an issue.
Of course if you wanted to pay this debt off then you certainly could - I'm assuming that you don't. You could either ignore the letter altogether or simply write a reply that you do not acknowledge that any such debt exists and do not intend to make any payment towards the alleged debt.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Hi Tixy
thanks for your help- I thought as such- its just most people on here have 6 year old debts plus...I want to write back to them and I have many Dubai friends that have been through same and all say they have no rights in the UK..
Thank you0 -
Hi tixy or anyone else who can help - following on from my first post I did send a letter to CCI saying i dont acknowledge the debt and want no further contact.
Today they have replied enclosing the agreement i signed....its for a car i bought out there but left there!! (a friend left it outside dealership and posted keys to my knowledge-but even if he didnt it is IN dubai and they do track things when no payments are recieved and also cannot be sold as they do checks before the new owner can buy-speeding fines, money owing on it etc...)
Does their copy of my signed agreement mean they can do anything?? and also what about the car now back in their hands?? they are chasing for the full original amount of the brand new car- never mind the 9 months of payments i did make??? PLUS the car is THERE
What should be my next step, I know even though they have agreement there is little they can do but do I explain in a letter all of the above or act dumb still???...or ask for UK law ruling they can chase this??
Oh and also they have enclosed the agreement for the full amount for the original car loan but the amount they are trying to claim for is 98,782 UAE dirhams MORE???!!!!!
Any help or advice appreciated0 -
As long as you never go back there I think you'll be OK. It sounds as if they've had their pound of flesh anyway.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

and also if i write back shall i state (admit) i made 9 monthly payments of xxxxx and they have the car back now anyway??0 -
It's up to you, of course, but if it was me I would ignore them. You might want to take professional advice on this, though; neither I nor I suspect anyone else who posts here are experts in the international laws regarding civil actions, especially with middle eastern countries.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

Following on from my previous posts and a few more letters and calls off CCI, today i have received a leetr off them saying they will now seek their clients authority to pursue their claim through the courts....i am aware this is unlikely but has anyone out there Dubai debt realted been ACTUALLY taken to court for it???
I am worrying but just want some re-assurance as to whether this could happen??
they have sent me copies of what i signed in Dubai etc....does that stand here ???0 -
