DOE Roads Service & NIHE confused.com

Right...I'm confused...Just called the roads service with regards to the grit box were getting which we now are not getting,so they're siting it on the main road 200 yards away..Apparently we don't qualify as we're not on a hill,which we are.Not to mention the area is mainly pensioners as well!
Then I asked about the clearing of the moss covering the pavement area outside my home,Roads service will clear the moss on the footpath but not on the central block paver's as they're not a footpath & not their responsibility even tho people walk over them,they're the NIHE's problem but the NIHE inspector (who was very helpful when he called & I cannot fault him) said the whole area was the responsibility of the DOE Roads Service....I've already slipped once on the moss & my neighbor has had a heart attack & quite infirm on her feet.Not to mention its a bloody eyesore!
So I've gone thru my MLA to get the issues resolved..

PS;The moss has gotten worse since that photo was taken a couple weeks ago.

This is the view from my living room;

    Hi spike, is there a residents assosiation where you live, a local band, etc ?...try mentioning it to them. Last year our local band had to take measures into their own hands and clear all the ice with spades for the elderly. Even at that, people from other areas had stole grit from the grit box for themselves and there wasn't enough to go around.

    If all else fails, buy yourself a set of ice shoe grips or stock up on grit once its distributed.

    You can buy grit in Tescos for around £3/bag. It's cleaner looking stuff than the DOE supplies.

    From the photograph I am surprised the Road's service have any involvement at all. The Road's Service are responsible for maintaining the roads and paths that they adopt when the houses were built. If it is not adopted it is not their responsibility.

    Thanks for the replies,the grit box isn't really an issue as until we all got the letter,we knew nothing about it,but the moss over the footpath is.In my block of four flats,my neighbors across the landing have both had heart attacks & the wife is quite unsteady on her feet thru this & arthritis,the neighbor downstairs from me is a pensioner & his neighbor is unsteady on his feet thru having a stroke.
    What the issue is is ownership.NIHE says it's the Roads problem,now roads say they're responsible for the paving but not the pavier areas which is the NIHE,but they say it's the Roads responsibility...
    Guess I'll just wait & see what my MLA comes up with as I'm getting nowhere apart from a phone bill calling Roads..DOE...Roads...

    Spike, get down to Land Registers NI in Great Victoria Street and find out who owns the mossy area. Roads Service (they're part of DRD as of 1999) will say they maintain the road and pavement, and no further back. You may find the land belongs to NIHE, or a developer, and won't be Roads Service's responsibility. Can't help you with the grit box though!

    Pretani,why should spike have to buy grit,after all it isnt his responsibility.It is someones, but the question is who is going to own up and take it.Theres a place where i live that looks almost like spikes palce in the pic.It is a memorial park in which the Council is supposed to clean but doesnt as its at the back of the park where nobody sees it (ie. potential tourists.)The hypocritical council only cleans the park properly(except for this part at the back of the park)when there is some parade or service on.It is very slippery for the local people who go there everyday to walk their dogs or take kids to play or even walk around.Its a Health and Safety matter as far as im concerned,and i would use that as ammunition when seeking out those responsible for clearing it in spikes place.The Local council or NIHE may be responsible for this area.Also if that particular part is not supposed to be walked on then they should have it sealed off.

    Spike this subject really gets to me.These lazy idiots trying to avoid their jobs.Ring your local Councillor,tell him/her you will go to the newspapers about the safety of this area and see how quick a potential owner appears.At the very least him/her should be able to tell you the right person to contact.Good luck friend.:)

    Spike

    Best of luck with it. Alex Easton should find it easy enough to find out if it was adopted by Roads Service. I would very much doubt it. In my experience they don't adopt areas such as this with planting beds and trees. The exception is grass areas in sight lines and along roads, and you would be surprised just how much that costs to cut each year. It is probably Housing Executives Grounds maintenance responsibility (or whatever they call themselves now). I assume that the Housing Executive cut the grass all around it. A bloke with a power washer would make a big difference there in a matter of hours.
