doesn't this machine have wireless built-in? Are you using a usb netgear adapter?
much of the bloat on there appears to come from toshiba.!!

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but you also appear to be running Avast (which is currently on version 6 and you have version 5) and Windows Defender.
You need to pick one and get rid of the other. I'd go for Avast.
There's also a load of stuff running at startup you don't need (Adobe, QuickTime, iTune and Java Scheduler). Not sure about the other startup items.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -

I tried doing most of the sticky before I posted (maybe not successfully)
5) As far as I'm aware, I've got PC Tools (firewall) Avast (virus) & spybot (spyware). I know I've got standard microsoft security (disabled) which was installed pre-purchase but I don't know how to, or if I should remove it.
8) http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe I tried this before posting but have a problem. Site loads, numerous things pre-ticked for 'disable' eg sunjavaupdatesched - but when I click on continue, I get the message ''Error on value : Sunjavaupdatesched. There was an error creating a MSConfig key''. I have to click OK and this message appears for every pre-ticked item. So nothing is actually done.
10) I did this and removed obvious rubbish and old phone. The java thing I can't - 'untick place icon in system tray' will not stay unticked. I do it and apply/ok but it's still ticked when I go back to check. Also having trouble disabling error reporting - control panel, system, advanced ... then no 'error reporting' element, just performance, user profiles & startup/recovery options.
Many thanks for all help. I'm having to answer everything piecemeal.0 -
''tick and fix these using hijackthis''
I can't - it won't. I click on the item, say 'fix' and then get the following error message.

This doesn't get the message - seems to work - but when I go back and do a new log - it's still there ?

Umm, hereby I display my ignorence. I think it's got in-built wireless but how do I check ? I thought the netgear stuff was to do with our broadband ? but I'm floundering here really.
There's a huge amount of Toshiba stuff when I look at the control panel - programs. All installed pre-purchase. Tbh I haven't got a clue what's needed or not needed so have obviously left it alone.0 -

When I went through the 'sticky' before I posted, I uploaded Avast 6 (as recommended). I already was using Avast ( I assume the previous version ) but don't know how to get rid of the previous version ?
My control panel/programs just shows :
avast! Free antivirus AVAST software 165MB
So I can't isolate the old (to delete) and new versions ??
Also I don't know how to delete Windows Defender and am not confident I should ??? I understand I probably don't need it but just need reassurance the world won't end if I delete it (plus how do I delete it).0 -
5 suggests uninstalling everything except avast and windows firewall, so that includes your Sunbelt 3rd party firewall. defender is still showing up as running, so not disabled properly. The world won't end. If the disable defender instructions in the sticky don't work, googling it will save time.
right clicking on the avast icon will tell you the version, new versions often retain old folder names.
it's difficult to write instructions for multiple OS's when they change the interface for no reason, error reporting instructions were for XP - google
are you running hijackthis and startuplite as admin?
if you don't have a usb wireless dongle hanging out of it, and are on the net wirelessly, you don't need the netgear software installed.
you can delete O16 (downloaded program files) inside IE, but deletion isn't that important, really just to tidy the log.
Don't have a Tosh handy to check all those toshiba exe's, but you should be able to find out what they are, and whether you need them by looking at all the icons near the clock as you kill them in task manager!!

Ok, have removed and freshly installed avast (from the sticky link). Right clicking doesn't tell me the version but the sticky said 6.
Sunbelt ?? I used it before PC Tools. I thought I'd removed it but did see it flicker by when scanning. So it's somewhere in the system but it's not showing in control panel/programs and I tried 'start' 'start search' with sunbelt and it finds nothing. So not sure how I find it to delete it ??
Going to google the 'disable defender' now.
I'll come back to your other comments after dinner
Greatly appreciate the help closed.0 -

reboot, post a fresh hijackthis log
if anything stops working as a result, go into msconfig and re-enable then reboot.!!

closed, don't know how much further I am, starting to feel disheartened.
Defender is disabled. Sunwall - I cannot stop - I went into the c drive, deleted it, rebooted and it was still there.
Using msconfig, startup - most of the items listed aren't there. I've tried to screen shot what msconfig, startup shows.
Will post a new hijack log next.0
