Leaving Tiscali

My 12 month contract with Tiscali is up shortly and I - shock horror
- want to leave them.
I want to join Orange as I can get 8MB wireless for £5 a month, whereas I'm paying £12.99 for 2MB wired with Tiscali.
My question is, what is the best way to go about leaving Tiscali? I have read a few stories about Tiscali and it sounds like they will make it as difficult as possible for me.
I occasionally work from home and am studying for an OU course online so really need an internet connection but am I right in saying that it could be at least two or three months before Tiscali free up my line so I can with another provider?
Many thanks in advance for your replies.
Edited to add: I just had a thought, would it be easier to just tell Tiscali that I want to leave at the end of my 12 month contract as I'm moving house shortly. Then, when Tiscali has cancelled my contract, I can just sign up with another provider.
I did think that perhaps Tiscali could put something on my line to stop me doing this, but if the story about me moving were true and I left the house phone number for the new occupants, then surely Tiscali wouldn't be allowed to leave a marker/tag (sorry, don't know the correct words) in case the new occupants want to have broadband.

I moved from Tiscali to Orange without any hassle.
I just rang up Tiscali asked for a MAC number. They obviously asked why I wanted to leave, etc, but didn't have a problem giving me the code. It was emailed to me straightaway.
I then gave the MAC number to Orange, and about 14 days later my Tiscali broadband modem stopped working. I then just connected using the Orange Livewire Box (following their easy to follow instructions), and was up and running within half an hour with no loss of broadband!0 -
Hi nic82,
I second what pknottm is saying - it should be very easy for you to change providers. If you've fulfilled your 12 month contract with Tiscali there shouldn't be any problem.
Just ask Tiscali for a MAC (Migration Authorisation Code) and then give it to Orange - When you switch providers using a MAC it's really easy and you shouldn't have to go without broadband.
If Tiscali get funny about giving you a MAC then wait until after 14 Feb - after this date it will be mandatory that an ISP has to provide a MAC upon request.
It's really easy what you want to do, don't be afraid of the process!
Kind regards,

Does it not get a bit more awkward/complicated if either or even both of the providers is using LLU equipment? Will all ISP's regardless of if using LLU, need to have systems in place for transfers after 14th February? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thank you to everyone who has replied. Hopefully my transition will be as smooth as pknottm's.
I have to admit that I do not know what LLU equipment is0 -
