Calculation the size of stove is fairly straightforward based on the room size (as has been mentioned), after determining the size, next choice is the design/type and price range.

From experience, be cautious about these calculators. They make a lot of assumptions which, certainly in the case of old buildings I have owned, are sometimes woefully unjustified.

thanks again peeps - i am reading and taking all advice on board.

one of the reasons i could never consider self installing and needed the specialist advice from the stove shop is my current fireplace opening is tiny - 16" high and 12" wide so that will need a builder to open it up ans as for flues i have no idea whether the iinside of the chimney is in good nick so need someone to look at that as well.
thats the trouble i was having in the shop - i don't know how far the chimney will open up, if my current hearth is suitable, or anything about the technical stuff.
so to ask me what i want before i know what i can actually have just seemed a bit frustrating (I.m fairly sure it was frustrating for them too!)
