switching broadband

I am thinking to switch from a Virgin Media cable broadband+ phone to a Primus package, do I still need a MAC code? Also, on my Virgin contract it is mentioned that I have to give them 30 days notice in writing, but they don't even mention the address. Pain in the neck, so can I just cancel the Direct Debit with them and say goodbye, or would there be fines, etc?
thanks
thanks

You can't switch to anyone else from VM, because you are on a cable service. All other providers require a BT based line for ADSL broadband, so you'll need to get a line installed to get any other service. Cancelling your DD does not cancel your contract-if you do that you'll remain in contract, run up a debt and have the DCO's calling. And your credit record trashed for 6 years.
A MAC code is only used for ADSL to ADSL transfers. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
thank you...so the Primus stuff requires a BT line ;(
the DD stuff you mentioned is rather scary! thanks for the clarifications, cheers0 -
Not just Primus-any other supplier than VM requires a BT based line (not a BT line).
I don't see why giving 30 days notice is an issue-it'll take you longer than that to get a new line provisioned anyway. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
More than 30 days to get a new line ? wow, so if I don't time the whole thing well I could end up without internet connection for many days....
I will write to Virgin Media, the problem is that they aren't very clear about where to send the letter. Their Terms only advise to send a 30 days notice. I'll try to find out. Thanks0 -
Give your notice to VM only when you have received a confirmed install date from Openreach. Usually 30 days minimum-it could be longer.

To calcel VM, just phone them to give notice.
I am in a similar situation and phoned Primus to enquire about time to install. I was told 2 to 3 weeks from date of order and most likely 2 weeks. Are they lying, if a minimum of 30 days by Openreach?Mark Hughes' blue and white army0 -
I think 2 weeks is optimistic. I said usually about 30 days-it's impossible to predict, depending on the workload on that exchange.
But given that OR have a monopoly, there's nothing to be done about it, so why worry? No free lunch, and no free laptop0
