Virgin Atlantic-direct from their site.

Most airlines had a sale up to Nov 15th which covdered fares up to June 22nd 2012

Wait until after Xmas when there usually are more sale fares.

IMHO you are looking too early for September to get a bargain.

Thanks for all the advice, im going to wait untill after xmas to try and get some flights in the sales hopefully, in the meantime got plenty reading to do on

Would definently recommend getting a car for the LA portion. It's worth it to drive down PCH1, the views are immense. I wasn't the most confident going over there to drive, but it was so easy, I wish I'd driven more! As well as the views on PCH1, LA is a massive sprawling area & really needs a car. If you have a spare night, I would recommend driving to San Diego and spending a day/night there.
