There are lots of places to stay along Rt1, if you're going in September you probably don't need to book in advance except for Labour Day weekend (first monday in September)
We've stayed just outside Monterey, in Pismo Beach and Ventura (we wanted to visit Six Flags Magic Mountain and it's an easy trip from there)
There is alot of good info on this thread, which has links to other threads and trip reportsEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0 -
Kayak should help you with internal flights as well. Agree about SF public transport is great and the cable cars are a must. We stayed in Vegas for 3 nights and then picked up a car from the airport and drove over to the Grand Canyon, returned the car and got a flight to SF.
If particular about your dates then book ASAP as flight prices are unlikely to come down for long haul unless you are travelling at an unpopular time. I think there is even an Amtrak train service between LA and SF0 -
Hi jackie that six flags looks awesome by the way your link doesnt work
just read this about trying to scrap the APD hopefully they can as its a right rip off best part of the flight charge is apd

Connection in IAD looks a bit tight, but I don't know the airport so may be do-able (provided the flight from LAS leaves on time).
Never flown Continental so can't comment on them on as carrier.Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0 -

Whoa:eek: £800 :eek::eek:
Way too expensive IMHO
I've just booked a LHR-LAX-SFO-LHR for £500 in June and drive around for 3 weeks.
Flight prices in Sept should be about the same I would have thought and if I were you I'd fly to SFO, spend time there without a car. Then hire a car, do Rt1 to LA Keep the car in LA-cost to park, Highways are a 'mare but you need a car to get around IMHO.
The drive to LAS-drop the car and fly back from there.
Simples (and cheaper!)0 -
That does look a decent price for an "all in" trip on one ticket. However, you would be then committed to those internal flights and they may be hard to change as they are part of one booking. As suggested above, if you were to book MAN to LAX, LAS to MAN as one booking now then you could leave the internal flights to a later date when you have more idea of what you want to do and have more flexibility with changes.
And, personally, I would avoid US Airways and pay a little more to fly BA or Virgin. See http://www.airlinequality.com/Product/Yseat-US.htm0 -
