Yea have seen this when have googled the problem! How do I know if they are both "open" as the end valve that leads into the floor just has a white cap? x

Remove the cap, it should simply pull off.

Underneath you will see, in the center, a rectangular or square brass post.

Using a spanner, unscrew this ( anticlockwise ), important count and take a note of the number of turns.

If this clears your problem, screw the valve in by the same number of turns noted.

With both valves open, if you still have no water flowing through the rad it's worth bleeding some water and possibly air out of the radiator, if you now find one pipe hot and one pipe cold the valve on the cold pipe is blocked or stuck closed.

After bleeding don't forget to check the boiler pressure when cold and possibly add more water via the filling loop, presuming you have a combi boiler. :)

Heres a better pic for a Thermostaic Valve for you.

    trv2.jpg

When you put the head back on open it up to max temp first. You'll find its much easier to fit that way. And it should only be hand tight.

Edit and if you HAVE got a TRV theres no point in faffing about with the Lock Shield Valve on the other end until you've proved the TRV.

    Cheers

Well if you have a TRV on it for heavenas sake don't belt the head with something. Take the head off by undoing the knurled nut that secures it to the valve body.

When you have taken it off you will see a pin in the centre of the valve. Try pushing down against its spring and see if it goes down. Its that you need to lightly tap if you cant push it down with your finger. Tapping the side of the valve won't do any good.

The point about opening the bleed valve and let some water out is that the water will be replaced if you have a more conventional system with a header tank and one of the pipes leading to the rad will get hot first as you let water out. Of course, if you have a combi boiler however, all that you will do is reduce the pressure in the system and then you'll have to top it up again.

    Cheers

From my experience, Keystone has it exactly. Although, when you remove the stat and see the little brass pin, you'll probably need to tap it sharply with, say, the end of a medium sized screwdriver to get it to shift from its stuck position. When you've released it, the pin pops up about 1/4" and if you've got the heating on, you'll hear the water starting to flow, so you'll know you've done it right.

The two times I've had to do it, on one of mine and one of my neighbours radiators, it took a few sharp taps to shift the pin. As others have said, the problem comes from having the stat turned fully off for a long time - eg over the summer.

    Good luck.

When you bleed the radiator what happens?
Depending on if the thermostat is on incoming or outgoing, it could help diagnose the problem.
    Total tosh.

there is green liquid at the bottom of the pipe that doesn't have the thermostat (if that makes sense??)

Err... I'd like to know more about the "green liquid".

Probably just a bit of copper that's turned green mixed with a bit of water. Nothing to worry about as long as it isn't too much.
