    For what it's worth......

Vandalism would leave a recognisable impact point.

If you've had frost recently and used hot water to clear the screen, then this is probably the cause.

Fully comp insurance is normally cheapest these days.

depends on the insurer , I know Swiftcover count it as a claim , Direct Line do not

If you claim off your insurer for a windscreen replacement or repair, then it is a claim (irrespective of who you are insured with)!

It goes down on your record, and must be disclosed to any new insurer you approach for a quote in answer to the question "Any claims or losses over the last x years"

Thanks for your replies guys. We're not covered. Insurance company quoted Autoglass, who'll do it for £430.....

Now that you have contacted your insurer about this, then you will need to disclose the loss to any other insurer you approach for a quote (even though you have paid for the repair yourself).

Ouch. That's crazy. Is that really how it works?

Pretty much so, insurance is really for big claims so if you are dumb enough to make a £100 claim the industry will get it back off you every year for the next five years.
