Shattered windscreen HELP!
Thanks for reading. My wife went out to our car today to find the rear windscreen shattered from one side to the other, with a gaping hole running across the top. We're not sure if its vandalism or just some kind of rupture. We weren't aware of any chip before.
Just need to know what to do next, hope someone can advise..

I'd be inclined to call the insurance company first, noting names etc, just in case there is a problem with the insurance paying the bill in due course if an i isn't crossed somewhere, the windscreen company will come to you for the balance if that happens.
This is important if your insurance company is of the cheaper variety.
If the insurance company won't cover it for some reason, ring round the smaller independent companies in your locality for cash price, i've had windows replaced for little more (and less for a side glass) than the usual excess payable....then get a proper insurer next year.0 -
Call your insurance company and they will put you through to their preferred glass replacement company. Dont call the glass company direct.
The rear screen is just another 'window' and will cost about £75 the same as the front windscreen.0 -
I got mine done by an independent. He added the cost of the excess on to the bill, so it cost me nothing.Never Knowingly Understood.

Thanks for your replies guys. We're not covered. Insurance company quoted Autoglass, who'll do it for £430.
Rang our local mechanic, who knows a window guy who'll do it for £185 new (even though they get their windscreens from the same place as Autoglass!) or around £100 if he can get one from the breaker's.
Either way, that's quite a saving and we get to support a local business. : )0 -
Who is your insurance with? If they don't cover replacement glass it's worth noting.0

If I needed a new window again I would phone around a few independence window people first. I got my front one replaced a few years ago via the insurance (with autoglass). Cost to me at the time £50 (and the insurance paper work said it costed them £180) but its added about £100 to my insurance quotes as a claim (just a glass replacement due to a crack, no accident involved) each time ive renewed. Still got another 2 years left to declared it as well, its going to have costed me over £500 in the long run.0
