Growing raspberries in containers? MERGED
Comments
-
I've been put of purchasing raspberry, blackberry and gooseberry canes because I thought they could be grown in containers. I cant really plant them in the ground as the soil is full of old rubble and such like.
If I can plant these into containers how big would the pots have to be and would I need to transplant them in the future?.
Is it also worth buying the small canes (£2 odd ones) or going for the more expensive and developed ones?.
I'd really like to grow some fruit this year so any help is much appreciated.0 -
All raspberry and blackberries will be small when you buy them as they regrow new canes each year.
Gooseberries grow into bushes, although you can train them if you want.
Blackberries and gooseberries only need a small footprint of decent soil, so it won't be difficult for you to sort that out.
Raspberries need a bit more space as they grow basically straight up, so you need a row of decent soil, as you plant them in a row.
They would all do off better in the ground, but if they have to go in pots then get bigger rather than smaller.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Sorry i might of asked this last year, but i can't find anything and i can't remember.
Is it possible to grow raspberry's in containers ?
i'm looking at growing as much as i can this year in pot's. not due to lack of space as have a huge garden. but we not sure yet of whats happening with the garden(long story) so i figured if as much as i can is in pot's then it can if needed be moved with ease. but also i like the idea of stuff growing in pots/container's. don't know why but i do.
I've got access to as many car tyres as i want (i've been told these are fab to use to grow things in) i've also got a couple of big spare black bin's. loads of large containers etc. so i want to make the most of what i have.0 -
yes but...
If you grow ordinary raspberries, they fruit on last year's wood - so you will not get fruit this year and if you have to disturb them next autumn/winter may not get a lot of fruit off them next year either.
If you grow "autumn" fruiting raspberries, which fruit on this year's wood, you could get fruit this year, then cut them down and transplant next winter, where they can reestablish in time to fruit happily next summer.
if you think they will be in pots for years, then it does not matter so much. But raspberries are a woodland plant and need a a cool root run, so shade this and water well.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

thanks both of you for the quick response, knew I could count on this board for good advice! Sounds perfect for what I need and I know that my children will probably beat the birds to most of the fruits in any case!! At least that's what happened with the strawbs last year!
will let you all know how I get on.
Just ordering some stuff from thompson and morgan (shallots/garlic/raspberries (free just P&P to pay) and some tomato seeds)
Also got loads of free seeds at the end of last year from a friend with an allotment so plan to plant carrots, peas, beans, salad leaves and beetroot and leeks. Should fill my patch up quite nicely!
I have also just bought a plastic covered shelf thing (like a very very small greenhouse with 4 shelves) to use for propagating my seeds so guess I'm going to have a busy few weeks!!).
Expect me back soon for more advice!! :rotfl:
