Growing raspberries in containers? MERGED

Gardening sometimes has to be done at the right time and now is the right time to plant raspberries, don't leave it any longer, the DIY can be done in a couple of weeks.
If you move them next year, or at the end of this year, it will put them back and they will take another year to establish.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Rubbish! I don't want to have to pressure on hubby!
Oh well, if that's the way it is and I was wrong about being able to start them off in pots I'll have to go and try to dig up that ivy myself and if I can't do it I'll promise hubby his favourite dinners for the rest of the week if he does it.0 -
The ivy really is massive and the roots are huge and thick. If between us we can't get it up quickly when would be the last time I could plant the raspberries in the ground? If I moved them in May or later would it kill them or just forfeit the fruit for this year?0
-
I don't think it would kill them, although it might, but they certainly won't be very happy.
Probably best to keep them in the pot until they go dormant again.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
I think you'll find everything you need to know here....

The really big deal is birds that will pinch all your raspberries if you don't net them well. Old net curtains work fine if you can cover them well or otherwise buy the commercial stuff. They're easy to grow and well worth it as they cost so much to buy. Also, you can get summer and autumn fruiters so you could potentially have yummy raspberries for months!
brilliant! I've got some old net curtains that I don't know what to do with! (my girls don't play dressing up as princesses anymore, so the raspberries can dress up instead)weaving through the chaos...0 -
Why are you digging the roots up? Just saw/chop the ivy down and plant around it. The roots will slowly rot in the ground and leave nice air and drainage channels.
It might throw up a few new shoots, but keep chopping them if it does and it'll die.0 -
Ixwood : does that really work? It's got massive roots that are taking up a lot of space so I'll be digging up some but if I actually don't have to worry too much about them then there are some I can leave and that would save LOADS of time and blisters!0

Yeah, just clear/chop what you can be bothered to. I do it.0

I would plant them one per pot.
