Why do you think those recurring payment authorities are every payday loan companies favourite method of calling in payments due? Unlike a DD, they cannot be cancelled by the person paying, only by the person/company receiving. The payment doesn't even stop after the owner 'has lost' the card. The bank has acted correctly in line with current regulations. There probably is need for a change, but this have to be international agreements, as many of those payments are border-crossing.

    Of course not! :D

So what you are saying that these companies can take and do whatever they like from you and they are acting within the law at the moment?

Yes, its a legitimate payment method actually favoured by some for renewing things like AA or Car Insurance.

I think you just beed to put it down to experience now, you now know these payment methods exist and as an earlier poster says there will have been an opt in/out at some point in the process from the reputable merchant who has introduced you to this company.

So as in all things (but especially online) "Buyer Beware" and READ, re-READ and thrice read the Agreements we are all tempted to glibly click accept on and make sure you untick any share my details boxes.

I'm not throwing a hissy wobbly my point of the matter is thankfully it was only £19.95, twice. But what regulation is there in UK law to stop these clowns from taking £195 or even £1950. If that were the case Santander would not have put a stop to it when I'm pretty sure they have the means to do it.

    .

If you have a contract with them to take those sorts of amounts then no law can possibly exist to stop them. If you don't have a contract then there's the law on fraud to start with.

You do have a contract to pay £19.95. I agree that it should be more obvious when you are setting up such a contract though
  • I am not sure if this is the same company or somwone similar but we bought a bus ticket from National Express and a plane ticket from Ryanair for both websites, once you had done the transaction, there was a continue button on the last page that, unless you looked very carefully, you would think that you had to click on it to finish the transaction. In fact the very small print next to it said it was one of these reward things. Very sneeky.

It's a recurring payment, so blocking your card and reissing a new is very unlikely to resovle the issue.

If it's a recurring payment on a card, it will stop if the card expires or is cancelled.

If OP thinks these payments are not legitimate that's what he should do if they do not stop: Cancel the card.

It's better to be chased for money than to chase others for refund...
  • This happened to me as well - I wanted to view my credit report with Call Credit - I viewed it and then ended my membership with them.
I thought that was it and no money would be taken. Two weeks later and 19.95 was taken out of my account.
I was annoyed but it's the not the end of the world..I just ended the membership with Rewards Now sharp and put it down as an experience.
My instinct told me before I gave Call credit my card details that I would probably be better off leaving it...in the future, I'll listen to my instinct!

Cancelling the card does not stop these payments, nor does expiry of the card.

For example, some companies, for example AOL, prefer to charge you on your card for your broadband. 6 years down the line your card may have expired and AOL can keep charging your old card, despite not providing them with new details.

If your cancel your card no new payment can be made on it. Otherwise I smell a nice lawsuit.

To my knowledge, if you cancel your card through "suspicious activity" then all payments to your previous card bounce. Otherwise, payments to older cards can still work if they have a CPA as your new card is linked to your old one.

It can stop them, but if the company is persistent then it will still be applied. Recurring payments will go through as they do not count as 'fresh' transactions. I see it all the time - i know it is appalling - but how do you think short term loan companies get their money, people think they will be clever and cancel their card with the bank but lo and behold a few weeks down the line Wonga or QuickQuid charge them.
