Would this put you off applying?

Seen a job I like the sound of but they have written this in the advert -

is an Equal Opportunities employer. We actively encourage applications from individuals from ethnic minority groups.

I'm a straight white female, I feel discouraged from applying because it sounds like they want to employ from ethnic minorities and would judge me because I'm not.

Are they allowed to print such statements that would discourage any ethnic group?

Why would it discourage you? Maybe in the past they have not had ANY ethnic minorities apply for jobs with them and just want to encourge them to do so by pointing out they are a fair employer.

You shouldn't be discouraged from applying. The selection will be based on merit. "Actively encourage application from ethnic minority groups" does not mean that they "definitely will recruit someone from ethnic minority groups". Hope this helps x

No, it wouldn't put me off, and this is absolutely standard in many organisations. It's to encourage applications from minorities where they are under-represented, because traditionally minority groups have been discriminated against and not felt able to apply.

It's positive action - not positive discrimination. You still have to get the job on merit (or other random factor that the hiring manager is looking for).

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
  • It wouldn't put me off applying either. I'm disabled & no employer has offered me a job so that they can tick their disabled box, so I wouldn't expect them to discriminate against you in any way.
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...
  • Personally I think it makes them just feel good about themselves.

"With absolutely no guarantees that we would offer them a job just because they are from an ethnic minority. But we like to be seen to be PC, fair, unbiased etc."

If I was offered two jobs, one from an employer who came out with this statement and one who didn't, all other things being equal, I'd go with the employer who didn't make this statement. Why single out ethnic minorities? Why not just say "We encourage applications from all communities"? It is certainly implied that ethnic minorities get favoured treatment, although whether this pans out in practice is hard to measure. Still seems like needless stirring up of racial tensions, however subtle.

Having said that it wouldn't stop me applying at all, however it would be on the list of 'cons' when weighing up whether to take the job. Not a significant one though, as it's fairly common these days from dumbass HR bods.

It's standard procedure people. If you feel discouraged about it, you're probably a racialist. I bet you feel discouraged by Michael Jackson for saying "If you wanna be my baby it dont matter if your black or white".

Yea whatever, deal with it and apply for the job.
