Total waste of time if you want them as a primary source of heat. The amount of ash given off is tremendous. Really not worth the effort in my opinion.0

Don't know if printer paper could be used but if so companies pay a fortune to have it taken away each month. If you have any hospitals or large companies nearby they may be happy to give you some bags their shredded waste paper?
...failing that there's always the bins out back0 -
my hubbys a printer he prints on card but aslong as you soak it long enough it's useable (after all you can sue cardboard in them) they fill 3 green bins a week with paper they cut off jobs and they pay to have it taken away i would def recommend contacting a local small printer and asking them, this is what inspired us in the first place but since we have no fire and the inlaws didn't get that into it they still pay to get that paper taken away, once we have a fire i'll have him bringing bin bags of the stuff homeDEC GC £463.67/£450

It seems an awful lot of effort to go to dispose of the stuff. I use mine for lining the combost bin in the kitchen to save on yuck factor cleaning that out at the other end.
We've been considering making manure brickettes.....we have loads of horse poop. Would the paper bricket maker do poop?:o0 -
I have heard of people having large bins with a lid on outside to put their paper into to give it a good long soak.0

Hi Chrisblue,
As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to the main thread on making paper logs and bricks where you may get more advice.

No need to spend £20+ on a brick maker - I've just bought one today from Argos for £6.99 (reduced from £19.99).
Can't wait to get started!!!:j0 -
something like 30 years ago, we bought one of the 'amazing' (???) paper brick makers. spent blooming bloomin hours making the blighters and storing them for the fire for winter.
did they work??? did they hell!!!!! useless as a useless thing. dont waste your money.
my husband had even resorted to sending me (yeah, i know) to the village recycling bin to gather in everyones elses surplus bloomin news paper. never again0 -
I am not sure if this has been discussed before but cannot find anything. I wondered if anyone had used the gadgets you see advertised to make solid blocks from waste paper to burn, I believe you soak the paper, compress it, dry it then burn it.
Are they any good? Has anyone tried a home made version? Do they produce a lot of soot?
We have a stove which we use mostly to burn wood, but it can be adjusted to take coal. I was thinking of trying to make something with old newspaper.0
