I am with Telewest BB Elite, can someone tell me the best site to check the speed of it and also advise me what sort of result I should be getting.

    go here and click on the europe server http://www.giganews.com/performance.html

    And here do see what your download speeds are
    http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/

    The elite package says up to 10meg so in theory you could get it but it depends on a number of things like distance from your telephone exchange, line quality etc. Also, as its LLU your speed will depend on the time of day i.e. at 8pm expect it to be slower as lots of people are online.

    Post your results and we'll see how good they are

    Is that the speed you got from the Zen test files or the Giganews test?

    If that is true then you have terrible speed for a line supposed to support 10megs. 440kbps is about 1 twentfifth of the speed you might be getting (assuming 10mb were achievable in your location).

    I think that's a little optamisitc! Even if he were sitting on the exchange he probably wouldn't get 10mb. I'm next to my exchange with a top quality line on an 8mb connection, snced @ 8mb but I get a realisitic speed of 6.5-7mb (most of the time).

    I think you need to acertain you line stats (through your router) and your distance from and status of you exchange.

    If thats all good I would say your connection is being trottled and/or shaped.

    i thought that Telewest only did cable, and i also thought that cable would be 10Mb regardless of where you live - its not like ADSL, as the cables are far superior

    It could be that the download checker was either;
    1) showing you download speed, of what you can download a file in - so 440Kbs is equivalent to a 4Mb service
    2) affected by you running other bandwidth hungry applications, such as email, P2P, etc
    3) the download checkers server isn't fast enough

    i would advise shutting everything down more or less, and do the speed check 2 or 3 more times
