  • i just looked and last year we used 8570kwh, so far this year we have used 7409kwh, by the end of the winter q we will have used WAY more. Lodger's fan heater and over zealous use of the tumble dryer may well be the culprits but her rent more than covers her usage to be fair (she moves out in summer 2012, will miss her) but we're in credit in the gas and electric to the tune of nearly £400 so not too worried...

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

Mine last year was about that last year. I live alone, gas central heating, never have anything on standby, watch tv about 2 hours a day, one load of washing a week, out all day and a few nights a week. I'm very careful on what a use and try not to waste anything.

If you have gas CH DHW and still using upwards of 8-9,000kWh pa, then clearly you are not careful about what you use. That is more than twice the national average of 3,300 kWh.
Otherwise you have a metering problem or an unknown device draining a lot of power.
Or are you possibly referring to the OP's original consumption?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I read it as being about the OP's consumption. Perhaps a quote would have helped?
  • I've got a gas hob and CH, similarly live alone, and I am out 8-6pm Mon-Fri and much of the day at the weekend. Using as much electricity as I need - a washing machine, fridge, microwave, pc, tv, etc, I used £30 of electricity in just over 2.5 months. (As the place I'm in has a prepaymeter due to the financial diligence of previous occupants.)
  • Sorry not clear but if you mean our 9000kwh per annum usage I know its high, not suggesting otherwise, but unfortunately my fellow housemates are not as interested in money saving as me! I have to pay 1/3 of the bill, if it was me paying it all i'd take the fuseboard out ;)

I was referring primarily to mondello's post.

Thanks everyone, it's good to hear your opinions and also learn other people's usage as comparison. I got my first bill now, and I'm in debit, but that's because my first payment went out to them late October (only payment) yet they started supplying 1st week in September. I don't quite know what to make of the bill, except that I've used £66.11 from Sept 7th to Nov 18th inclusive for gas, and £35.51 electricity from Sept 3rd till Nov 18th inclusive. I didn't put the heating on much till the 2nd week in October though, so it seems I've used a lot of gas probably over the last month. And I've reduced my direct debit from £65 to £56. I am thinking this is possibly too low for winter, but would average out over the year. I'm pretty sure this is just simple maths and I'm not quite getting it! Oh also I was wrong about the shower, I meant that it is gas, not electric!

On those consumption figures you should consider switching to Ebico.

Your electricity usage is so low as to be unbelievable. 3kw per day? That's little more than £110 per year-£2 a week.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
