ok, my turn to ask for help

had no problems connecting to and updating the bios on a BT home hub yesterday via an ethernet cable

today trying to connect to one of these to check the settings (cannot see the wireless broadcasting so want to check settings) it refuses to play ball at all.It attempts to ping but times out to 192.168.0.227 , also gives DNS error when I use IE.I've set the IP on the Network card to 192.168.0.210 + 255.255.255.0 as it tells you in the manual, tried the reset button, tried rebooting the PC, tried powering off the router for a while.....but naff all

any ideas ?? I'm using the same PC and ethernet cable as yesterday

  • Hmm Sorry to ask...

Telewest router with a BT Connection?

If you have a Telewest cable modem then I sort of know what the problem is. For some reason when you connect the modem to a new device you have to reregister the device using the cd that comes with the modem, THEN your pc can access it through the router!

Its very strange.. If the internet works directly connected, then you use a router you have to re-register the modem which is done through the software.

sorry, didnt explain....purely trying to access it on a standalone Pc with no internet connection , only want access to the control panel to play with/see the settings

and drivers not required for ethernet connect or wireless, I can access the bloke across the roads Netgear and see his panel over wireless from this PC with no problems ( and its not installed on here )

  • Ok so a few more things...

The default IP Addy of the hub/router. I'm assuming its: 192.168.0.227 ?

If so, and the ping isn't working, then either its the cable in between or the routers stuffed :s When you plug it in with an ethernet cable does your pc recognise media? If so have you tried obtaining IP automatically?

(As for the working yesterday, if its not detecting connectivity at all of any cable on the pc then its possible the router stuffed up or the cable broke in between yesterday and now :p)

Guess the OSI Model is useful for one thing. When troubleshooting go up the layers...

So check cables/connectors etc make sure lights are lighting up when the cables plugged in.. then its the actual connectivity and use of ping. If its a layer 2/3 prob and you KNOW the router and ethernet cable work, then there has to be 100% software intervention....

I know your a teccie yourself so won't pound you with the whole "are your firewalls off..." Guess you know your comp more than us! :)

Just for information: Where is the exact problem? Do lights link up? Do any pings work? On obtain automatically what does ipconfig in CMD show? Can you/Have you tested the same cable and router within different environments to test they actually are working?

    Thanks

  • Does the Ethernet LAN light lit on the router and the computer's NIC?

Are you using the Ethernet cable that came with the router?

Could you post a hijackthis log? :D

Assuming that you are using the correct lead (not sure if a crossover would work), and there is no other dhcp server on the network..

You could try this, and then do a scan, to see if it can find the ip of the router

    Run it and click discover.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • If its a home router/hub then only a straigh-through work, while proper routers (CISCO etc.) would require crossovers as they act as pc's.

Confuses the hell outta me but hey :p

  • If the lights are up on the router it eliminates the cable being the problem as it recognises the PC.. does the PC recognise that media is connected? If so what IP does the pc get assigned if used automatically? Or is DHCP disabled

"cable modem so this is a router..(modem not connected)"

If its a Wg602 its not a router it's an access point.

Doesn't help with your problem mind you! Has it ever worked?
