The tone of his voice said it all unfortunately.

As I originally posted, it was the morning of the snow and I must have seen less than half a dozen customers in the shop as I walked round. An unlucky day for him to choose.
    Unfortunate all round.

I've just recently been given this information:

    8. No collection shall be made in a manner likely to inconvenience or annoy any person.

    9. No collector shall importune any person to the annoyance of such person.

    10. While collecting:

    (a) a collector shall remain stationary; and

    (b) a collector or two collectors together shall not be nearer to another collector than 25 metres.

I think it applies to national regulations rather than just the area in which I got the information, but it's interesting. Wonderfully vague.

Well, I wasn't going to get into this but since I'm the original author of the "you can shake but you can't annoy," quote, I'm already in. I'm a professional fundraiser but I'm also a charity donor.

Here's what I do. I'm a Money-Saver so I have a budget and I like to see that the charities I support get the maximum support from my donations. So I decide how much I'm going to give during the year and I make sure it gets to the charities in a tax effective way. I use Give-as-you-earn payroll giving to take a donation out of my pay pre-tax. All other donations by cheque or credit card go with a Gift Aid declaration so the charity can reclaim the tax I've paid. I'm going to set up a CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) account soon to monitor our charitable giving even better and insure I can claim back the tax on my wife's donations since she is a high rate taxpayer (a doctor).

And the bottom line is, I sail right past tin rattlers and chuggers with a smug smile and say, "I already gave."

we hate charity collectors, and my partner has had more then one argument with them, the last one was for a charity that would effect his mum as she suffers from the condition, buy a raffle ticket win a car, we said no, and got a reply back of "well hope you don`t need our help someday"

baton down the hatches he`s gonna blow!! i thought..

he told them stright when his mum asked for THERE help, she was refused it, so why should he give money to them when people who need the help can`t get it (she needed about £100 for new batteries and wheels for her electric wheelchair), they gave him the "the more money we get the more we can help..." so he asked how much a ticket was, then said "ok i`ll give my mum that amount and cut out the middle man" and what made it worse, they refused his mum, yet on the stall they had a picture of a guy who they`d BOUGHT a chair for (even though we bet he could have got one trough his benefits, like his mum has to do)

and on the radio a few month ago the same thing was said, a couple had given £10 a month to a cancer charity for years, his wife got cancer, they asked for help, and was refused it, then a few days later they got a letter asking if they would INCREASE there donation to help people with cancer

when we do give money it`s to lesser known charities who need to money to help, and not build a new office or pay HUGE wages.

I was walking down a street with my OH one day a few months ago and got stopped by a "chugger" (never heard them called this before! lol). It was cold, we were busy, I saw him approaching me so I smiled and said I give through work. Which I do. As per a post above, I give as I earn. The guy said to me well surely you can afford some more. And I said, no I'm really sorry I can't, I already give as much as possible. So he replied, well tell me how much you earn and we'll see if we can find some more.

I was outraged. So I replied (still calmly), how much of the salary you earn for doing this do you donate to charity. He told me it was none of my business!!! At this point he clearly realised this was not going to be a fruitful repsonse and tried to backpeddle. I was having none of it and said if it was none of my business how much he gave, it was none of his business how much I gave.

SOME (not all) of these people do so much more harm than good for charity.

i've always been told it is illegal to rattle the tin or ask for money as it is considered begging.

Well, I've always been told that begging itself is not illegal - you just need a licence!
  • Did my first collection for a charity on Friday. Was at a tube station. I stood about 5 metres away from the ticket barriers, held my bucket and just smiled. The letter from London Transport said there was no bucket shaking allowed. Most people walked past, but a fair few donated after seeing the cause written onto the side of the bucket. Even if I'd had the cheek to ask for donations, it would have been impossible as there were probably 10,000 people through the station in the time I was there.

The charity, an Air Ambulance, is one that we all hope we'll never need, and some people said that to me when dropping money in the bucket. The only time I think I'd say something like "I hope you never need to use us" is if someone was unnecessarily rude when I'm standing there 'peacefully'. Especially when the work is voluntary and unpaid.

I personally dislike the chuggers.... an 'acquaintance' is one. He's extremely arrogant and pushy and this is probably why he got the job.
