Dried Bark good for starting fires?

I was walking the forest and noticed a lot of bark left randomly from the logging of trees and I though to myself dried bark could be good for starting fires in the stove?

Surely a wet bark will only take couple weeks to dry if set within a garage?

  • You can dry most wood kindling by leaving it beside the stove. The trick is to break it down as small as possible so more surface area can lose moisture. I personally break down logs for kindling and just ignite it with firelighters. However I have thrown in bark, saw dust etc but would not be 100% sure of the efficacy of one or the other; though needless to say each burns.
  • I often put dried bark on top of kindlig before putting the logs on. Bark if dry burns well. Birch bark can be lit like paper but the bark you are talking about seems more substantial. I use bark which has fallen off stored logs and is thus dry. I think fresh bark would take a few weeks to dry in an unheated garage.
Other comment is that Id collect a log rather than bark as there is far more calorific value in a log than in the equivalent volume of bark. However if there is only bark freely available its well worth collecting.Stay warm

I use bark that have fallen off logs and any bits of wood I get for kindling even use twigs that are dried.
