2MB Broadband and wireless router?

HI

I have a 2MB Virgin broadband. I plan to set up wireless connection so that my daughter can use a laptop. The PC will still be connected directly to the modem.

I have been given a second hand NETGEAR ADSL firewall router DG834g V2.

Can I ask peoples comments, is it advisable to try to use a second hand router? will the 2MB be enough? and will it connect to my existing modem ok?
in fact any advice appreciated, as I am a bit in the dark here.

The DG834G is a modem/router and designed for ADSL connections. For a VM cable service you will need a cable router. If it's Virgin National ADSL then it's fine.
It will not connect to your existing cable modem, if that is what you mean.
PS: if you are on VM cable then you should be getting a minimum of 10Mbps, not 2.

It says 'cable modem' - so I guess it is a cable one.

Even if you've still got a cable modem from NTL days?
EDIT: if you have an old cable modem, what do you ask VM for when you ring them up?

I am on 2MB.

We got upgraded to 10MB, but is was no faster, so when they put up the prices, we went back to the 2MB package.

Is there a modem you would recommend?
are there any security issues?

Sorry - I interrupted the thread. If you're on cable you stay on cable (not ADSL). I think you have 2 options:-
1. connect your current cable modem to a "broadband router"

or (and this is what i'm interested in)
2. what does Virginmedia offer as default these days? I assume they do a combined cable modem/router? If so what do you ask them for when you ring them up?

No, because an ADSL modem won't work on a cable service. The cable modem belongs to VM and is not yours to replace-and they should have upgraded it if necessary when they upgraded all customers to 10Mbps. Are you sure that you are not connecting it via USB instead of ethernet? If so I recall that the USB side would only run at about 3MBps.
Why did you revert to a 2Mbps package if the minimum charge is for 10MBps?
I'd ask VM to upgrade your cable modem if necessary and at the same time to supply you with a wireless router.

Those broadband routers look good (cheap) is that all I need?

Virgin media want to charge me £60 for a hub modem and router combined - did not ask if it was cable or asdl as did not even know there were two sorts when I called them

It can only be a cable one if you are on a cable service. An ADSL modem router would be for a Virgin National ADSL service.
You shouldn't have to pay for a modem upgrade, because that is VM's property and responsibility.
VM cable is not a cheap service so it's crazy to be limited to only 2MBps.
Ask them to upgrade the modem FOC to give you the 10MBps you are paying for.
You can the add a cable router yourself from about £20 if necessary.
