Deliberate accidents

This one really !!!!!! me off last night. It has happened before but I haven't seen it for a while.

I was going home from work and I got this pratt in front of me doing about 20 mph - car full of teenagers. Every time I tried to overtake he accelerated causing me to back-off (I drive a diesel) and as soon as I pulled back in behind him he slammed on the brakes causing me to nearly tail-end him. It became obvious that he is one of those people that deliberately tries to get someone to tail end them so that they can make all sorts of claims against your insurance.

Fortunately I am wise to it but I could just imagine a younger boy/girl-racer ... wouldn't stand a chance. I did take his registration and gave it to the police but as they said there was very little they could do - I told them that if the person is involved in an accident then I would more than willing to be called as a witness to testify as my experiences of the driver.

Sometimes people do this to warn the driver behind that they are driving too close.

I realise you were trying to overtake but would you have been able to stop if he'd needed to make an emergency stop?

Obviously I wasn't there so I'm not trying to accuse anyone.

Just suggesting that his motives might not be what you are thinking.
This is normally done to say "BACK OFF - you're too close" rather than to deliverately cause an accident - although you are right it can be dangerous and cause an accident.

BTW - I have been told that the words
"I want to allege dangerous driving" cause something to happen.

I believe that the police then have obligations.

If you are in an accident and you call the police and say this then I believe they are obliged to attend.

As usual - it's all about invoking the correct legal phrasing to get seomthing to happen.

Perhaps someone working in the police force could verify.
  • What was the speed limit on the road he was driving 20mph?
    Sense is not common.

After my first attempt at overtaking this 'wannabe-coffin-filler-that-will-hopefully-get-his-wish-as-soon-as-possible' I was giving him plenty of room.  I have never been a tailgater and had given him plenty of room in the overtaking  manouvere.   If someone is too close you flash your brake lights but I knew he was up to no good when he managed to smoke his tyres on the first attempt he tried to get me (I am talking of standing on the brakes ... and to give you an idea of the distance I was behind him, I had to brake firmly but did not smoke my own tyres) - and his passengers were all laughing and pointing out the back - oh how I would have loved to be back in an HGV vehicle because then I would have had an excuse for eliminating these low-lifes from the food chain.

Remember the trick is to get someone to overtake you ... as soon as they do accelerate to block them ... they will fall in behind you and due to the nature they will be closer than normal (this is what they rely on ). You then slam on your brakes causing them to tailend you - especially helpful if the person that is trying to move back in again is checking their mirrors etc. They then call the police and invoke the dumbass law that says the person that hits the car in front is ALWAYS to blame (I know there are a few exceptions but it is hard to prove).

Speed limit on the road is 40, wide open plenty of vision (the traffic usually sits at about 50-55 on the road) - suffice to say if it is coming close to a police raffle they stick a speed camera on it to get loads of extra revenue.

    Simple solution Ivan.

Get yourself a two-wheeled 0-60 mph in under 4secs pocket rocket like me.

Then you can overtake him in 2 secs flat whilst giving him the Gareth Hunt Nescafe bean shake as you go past.

They sound like alot of the lowered suspension nova/saxo, still living at home, mcdonald's wages burning a hole in their pocket, bass-box booted tosspots we get round here.

i rarely get in the car these days, the benefit of which is never having to put up with these w*nkers for more than a couple of seconds.

Though i would get slightly more injured should i run into the back of them

A fine balance to walk but worth the risk. (IMO)

i hate ppl who come to a roundabout which can easily be seen to be empty. they slow down..stop, start going and then brake suddenly before setting off again. i have no idea why these ppl do it. Its similar when in traffic queues, you always get one that, instead of settin off smootly, they accelerate sharply and then proceed to brake as fast as they can.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
  • Rygon, don't get me started on roundabout discipline, The ones i really are those whose cut across lanes on roundabouts, & nearly shunt you into the middle.

Or the !!!!!! i had in front of me yesterday that approached in the left hand lane, indicated right & went the whole way round the roundabout on the left in order to take the last exit.

Yep i'd agree with that... well, maybe not 2 seconds as i've only a 125 at the moment :P

Hum, they seem to have upgraded to Corsas around here, lol

    Hello IvanOpinion

If you experience this type of driving again, try the following:

1 If the road allows and traffic is not too busy, pull over and park with your hazard warning lights on. Let the idiot drive off and find another victim.

2 Continue to follow the idiot but slow down even further, if he's doing 20 mph you slow to 15 mph. This will give you a better stopping distance and create the traffic jam from hell behind you. When grid lock has been achieved, along comes plod and you can have pleasure in explaining how the idiot is responsible for the 1 - 5 mile tail back.

Whichever choice you make, remember to keep a passive expression on your face......don't give the idiot the satisfaction of knowing that he's winding you up.
