Pushing back tenancy start date

We are in the process of applying to rent a house through a letting agents. The 1st month deposit/ rent etc is being funded through a property sale that is going on at the moment.
They want us to sign on the 15/12, however I found out today that the funds may not be there on the 15th as that's the date given for the completion of the sale.
Is it reasonable of us to ask for the date to be pushed back a week? Or would we lose the agreement. Nothing has been signed yet, they are just going through the checks/ references etc.
Originally the letting agent suggested new year to start but the landlord said the 15th.
Worried now :(

The date the tenancy agreement is signed is not critical - what matters is the date the tenancy starts. So you can sign on the 15th. Or,indeed, tomorrow. Provided you pay the rent before the start date there's no problem.

What you are asking is whether you can postpone the start date of the tenancy. You can ask for any start date you want. There is, of course, a chance the landlord will not agree to postponing the start date, but realistically what can he do?

If he refuses to postpone, and you refuse to proceed, he'll have to find a new tenant. And credit check/reference them. Just before Christmas. Chances are his property will be empty till New Year with no rent coming in.

Far better to postpone a week, get you in and start earning rent over Xmas.
