Free photo editing software

There are SO many bits of free photo editing software out there, I just have no idea which to download, so can anyone help and recommend one please?

I have two criteria:

1. edit some dribble out of the photo on my boy's chin! :D
2. create some sort of collage with lots of my boy's photos.

Any suggestions?

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Takes a bit of learning, but I've found GIMP to be very powerful.

  • For collages I use this, it's free and pretty good too http://www.shapecollage.com/

I have found Paint.Net very good. Free to download and use, and you can also get additional effects plugins for free from the PaintNet forums.

Alternatively, google Picasa has blemish correction (which can be used to cover up dribbles) and auto-collage facility. Plus, it's really really easy to use.

+1 for Picasa, does exactly what you want.

  • If you really want a professional looking job then GIMP is very good. I actually prefer it to photoshop but it does take a bit of time to work out.

PhotoScape is another good free editing program that will do what you want.

Thanks for the responses. I tried to download GIMP, but kept getting an error message when it was installing, and everytime I hit ignore, it kept coming up again a few seconds later. I had to abort the installation in the end :(

I'm going to give PAINT.net a go first. It's a BIG blob of dribble to edit out, but otherwise such a lovely photo - worthy for the grandparents!

And there are so, so many threads here advising good free photo editing packages!

    But.....

    Dear god!

Are folk still advising an impenetrable behemoth like Gimp for very simple photo editing jobs!

Picassa advised above is good, I've only barely looked at Photoscape but it seems to be amply adequate and the package I'd suggest is Hornin Style Pix:

    http://hornil.com/en/downloads/stylepix/

    And/or Faststone Viewer:

    How to collage in Faststone:

Both are free, straightforward, effective and low-resource demanding if your PC ain't the latest rocket. :)
