How to get refund for goods bought on Egg card taken over by Barclaycard?

Options
Has any one managed to get a refund onto their new Barclaycard which replaced the Egg card for items purchased with the Egg card?

I am trying to return items bought online to a store and I am sure that as their policy clearly states you need to bring the card the item was purchased with to get the refund put back on.

My Egg card obviously is no longer valid and the new numbers on the Barclaycard do not match their paperwork. The item I purchased all be it just under £50 is from a shop I rarely buy anything with so I don't want a credit voucher I want my money back. I have all the receipts required just no card! Barclaycard did not seem very interested when I phoned and just suggested I tell the retailer that I had been sent a new card when Egg was taken over. I can see the retailer's point that they only want to refund to the card that made the purchase.

What am I to do???? Any one had any luck with this?

Have you pushed back on the retailer? and told then the old card can no longer be used?
    What did they say?

They MUST have procedures for lost/stolen/closed cards or people in hospital/in a coma etc.

I'd be pushing back on the retailer.
  • The refund can still be issued to your egg card after which you can either login into egg.com and request a refund or request a transfer via contact us to your barclaycard.

Any refund to your egg card will be redirected to you Barcalycard by the system. Just like any payments to your old egg card.
If you keep on doing what's you've always done, you'll keep on being what you've always been...

Am I the only one who has disposed of the card?
  • Thanks for the replies. In my haste to be efficient I cut up my card when the new Barclaycard one arrived so I have no card to show them, that matches the card number on the receipt. When the retailer issues a refund they check the last few digits of the card the refund is going on then they swipe that same card. I can see their point that their policy is that the refund has to go on that card. If it is cancelled or invalid then that is not their problem it would be down to the goodwill of the manager. The difficulty is proving that the new card is the replacement for the Egg one.

If I could magic my snipped up Egg card out of the bin I am sure they would believe me and not think that I am trying to pull a fast one and get a refund for something not bought on my card but someone elses. It is just annoying.

They will happily issue a gift card because I can provide the goods and the receipt. Not ideal when it is in a shop that I rarely buy stuff for so the gift card could easily be sat in my wallet for a year....when I could do with the money. I bought 2 sizes of an item and just wanted to return the one that didn't fit...

I wouldn't have thought that they were obliged (by credit card rules etc) to refund only to the card that was used. I can see that they should refund in the method that was used, but surely a quick word with the store manager would explain things well enough for them to override any restrictions that they might have about refunding to the specific card.

I've encountered similar in the past (though not in a combination of online purchase / offline return) and had no difficulties persuading them that I couldn't present the original card because the old one was either out of date or had subsequently been lost / cancelled.

Have you actually tried to return it and been knocked back? If not I expect you're over-complicating things - just go in, don't say anything and if they ask then explain that you've got a new card.

I can see their point that their policy is that the refund has to go on that card.
It's about them getting their fees refunded.
I am not sure whether they need the exact card or whether it has to be the right type e.g. visa, but that is why the policy is there.
If they give you cash, they lose the 2.5% fee (or whatever) that they paid to visa or mastercard.
If it is cancelled or invalid then that is not their problem it would be down to the goodwill of the manager.
So have you asked the manager? What did he/she say?
The difficulty is proving that the new card is the replacement for the Egg one.
Have you not have several letters/emails? or have those all gone too?
I am sure they would believe me and not think that I am trying to pull a fast one and get a refund for something not bought on my card but someone elses.
It's not about that. It's about getting the fees back.
They will happily issue a gift card because I can provide the goods and the receipt.

You need to talk to the manager and get some evidence together.
There is loads of evidence on the net even if you have disposed of all the emails and letters you got.

When I owned a retail store it did not matter which card you used for the refund, I would still get my fee back from my acquirer (bank). So at the end of the month they would work out how many sales I had done and charge x% and how many refunds I had done and rebate x%
