Do you have a Costco near you and do you have plenty storage? If so, may be worth bulk buying non-perishables from there after carefully comparing prices as sometimes, it's no cheaper.

Wow thanks for all your input guys it is really appreciated. I didn't realise you could freeze some of the stuff you mentioned, especially freezing milk (you learn something new everyday ha!!).

. And also I know its fussy but I hate flat coke and I find that bottles go flat after a while.

Don't forget 'flat coke' is brilliant chucked down the loo last thing at night and left overnight to bring it up nice and clean in the morning ]

1 Tesco Fish Pie Mix 320G £2.70 £2.70 - hmm. Check out a fishmonger maybe? I find supermarkets are extortionate for fish, but I do live near a fish dock :o
1 Dove Pro Age Rich Body Butter 250Ml £3.74 £3.74 - if things are tight, maybe drop a brand? I can understand the attatchment, dove products are gorgeous but there are cheaper options.

    1 Tesco Prepared Butternut Squash 220G £1.00 £1.00
1 Vegetable Soup Mix £1.00 £1.00 not sure what this is since I can't find it online. Possibly one to make yourself with leftover veg?

Well, from what I can see there's a lot of prepared things there, and you are paying for the convenience. Also I'm not sure why there's such a mish mash of organic/non organic stuff. Maybe you could drop to non organic all round?

I'm also a little confused why you have passatta AND ready made sauces. If you have the freezer space you could bulk make and portion off a good base tomato sauce, then adjust as necessary.

Good storecupboard basics are a necessity when cooking from scratch. Get a good base of herbs and spices, and a good solid base of veg and the world is your oyster. It's amazing what you can make with tomatoes/garlic/onions and varying the herbs/spices. Flour, butter and milk are at the base of a white sauce. Adding vegetables for flavours, and the herbs again, you can make anything you fancy.
I made a pasta dish for the family the other day, with white sauce (flavoured with garlic, onions, a bit of leftover cheese, a bit of leftover homemade stock and the end of the pack of smoked bacon, leftover chicken and a few mushrooms that were hanging around in the fridge) - they loved it.

There is nothing wrong at all with shopping when you have a freezer full of food - as long as you aren't wasting anything. If things start to look past their best, use them up and either eat or freeze. Know what you have in the freezer and cupboards before you start, so you're not duplicating, and meal plan to make sure you use up everything you have in - quick example, for the lasagne and the meatballs, you could have bought the mince and the big bag of onions, with a little garlic/mushrooms/herbs/spices this would have made both.....with leftovers :)

hope this is of some help!

I suppose its because I am buying the loose veg that isn't helping. I have also found a good little website that does a meal plan for 1 which I am going to try as it says it should be around £15 for the whole week for dinners.

    This is the site: http://resourcefulcook.com/mealplans/browse/forone

I look forward to your comments :)

I think everyone else has pretty much covered what I would have said, but I will say.....coke

Think of it this way, ditch it and you'll be saving £8.85 a week (assuming you buy it weekly) or get this, a massive £460 a year! ......but you'll also be doing your teeth a huuuge favour (and saving further by not having to pay the dentist a fortune :D ) I can't drink the stuff at all since I saw an experiment with a tooth dropped in coke for a couple of days, and it had all but dissolved by the end of it

Walkers prawn cocktail crisps....extortionate, but o.m.g. I love them. Absolutely adore them. Can't have them now due to gluten problems  absolutely pointless asking you to drop a brand on that one because there is nothing quite like walkers prawn cocktail :rotfl:

Ehm, I'm not judging here, that's not my job, but there's lactose in your ice creams. Do you need 10 ice creams a week? It's winter, brrrr:rotfl:

Very little fruit and veg, hon. Try to avoid the ready meals. They're full of additives, salt and sugar. There are lots of recipes online with step by step instructions if you need them. Experiment with recipes, it's great fun when you "invent" something tasty.

Try shopping down a brand, so Tesco's own instead of "Finest", as an example. Don't be too hard on yourself though. Make a list and stick to it. Meal plan if that works for you, or at least have a vague idea as to what you're having for dinner through the week.

Half the battle is realising that something needs to be done, so well done to you for that. Small steps and you'll get there. :T

First of all apologies to AFK_Matrix for hijacking her thread :o and secondly thanks for the replies :)

To answer some of the questions...

The convenience items, desserts & toiletries were all on special offer (half price in most cases) and that's the only time I ever buy them, never pay full price and will last weeks, if not months. The soluble paracetamol is a necessity, can't take tablet form. I've tried using cheaper handsoap options before but find it dries my skin too much, and no way would I give up the Dove, it's my only luxury :rotfl: (all half price though :p)

The lack of veggies is because I already have bags of frozen veggies in the freezer. Far more convenient (for me) and more nutritious than fresh in most cases. This is why my list probably seems a bit mishmash and not a complete list for a week's shopping.

The chicken makes 4 meals plus gallons of soup using stock from carcass & leftover bits of chicken along with the vegetable soup mix and lentils/dried peas etc. The ready mashed potatoes - I rarely use old potatoes so to be honest they're not worth buying as even a small bag would end up sprouting before I got through them all. I buy a small bag of baby new potatoes once or twice a month and never eat chips. Each tub of mash lasts 3 meals (portioned & frozen) which I use with the braised beef & 'fish pie'.

I do usually make my own tomato sauces, hence the passatta but it's nice every now & then to be lazy and use a jar so I always grab a couple when on offer ;) and the bay leaves were the cheapest, even cheaper than Tesco own brand! I couldn't possibly make my own meatballs any cheaper than I paid for them! (£1.50 for 480g).

I think that answers most questions. I know I need to make more of an effort to cutback and use cheaper options so all comments gratefully received. Perhaps I should start keeping a tally of what I actually use in a week and how much it actually costs in real terms.

This little lot here came to nearly £70!!

I usually average around £35-ish a week for 1 person, and apart from loo roll which was on offer I cant for the life of me see how it comes to £70, I also juice a lot hence the fruit.

hehe after going through all that, I had a looksy at my past shopping lists.....the people at the checkout must raise a few eyebrows I think. I tend to shop on offer too - we went to morrisons and bought pork shoulder when it was £2.25 a kilo...we bought a LOT :rotfl:

Not one of my shopping lists looks like a complete shop in itself....we have more of a rolling shop I guess. Stuff on offer is bought and stored, so some weeks we may have just washing powder, cheese and meat, whereas other weeks it's veg, fish and toiletries!

Quick tip for the ready made sauces, quite often approved foods have them on sale cheap - I got six dolmio sauces for £1 a while back. I don't use them often but yeah, for those lazy days (or full of cold days) you can't beat a bit of convenience :o

Trouble with approved foods is you need to have enough in there to justify the cost of the postage :(
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

Don't throw away food challenge started 30/10/11 £4.45 wasted.
