Running a website..

Hi.

Basically is it difficult to run a website?. I am not talking about building one etc as i guess webdesigners would take care of that.

What i am takling about is changing a bit of text, adding the odd picture etc. I know there are different CMS systems and admin tool but are they really easy to use.

I am thinking of starting my own website up and would like to know how easy/hard it is to maintain it.

If there are any web designers pls PM me as i am looking for someone to maybe build me a site.

CMS systems tend to be very easy to use (assuming you're vaguely computer literate which I'm guessing you are as you're asking the question on a forum). I have set up and maintain two websites using Wordpress and it's very straightforward. I also maintain my company's website which uses our web designer's proprietary CMS - this is less intuitive but still fairly idiot proof. :D

What sort of site? Setting up your own basic site is a lot easier than you think...
  • I have to vouch for Wordpress too: it's a really user-friendly system, and the good thing about it is that it can be as complex and customizable or as simple as you want. Give it a try!

This is just a test can you let me know if it's ok?.
  • Orville, you need to use a spellchecker, and, ideally, get someone to proof read your copy before posting.

You know the link i posted in the blog. Is there a way to hide the link and just say use one word for people to click on..?

Anyone know how to do that?.
  • If all you are wanting to do is modify text, add a new page to a section etc it is very straight forward to do with 90% of the CMSs out there, many use the same actual component to do the data entry part even if how it works behind the scenes is different. If you can use Word you can use it!

That said, if you are wanting more complex designs to look good it is more difficult to achieve, not really due to a limitation of the tool (though it isnt what they are really intended for) but much more because it is actually difficult to design good looking functional pages and many home made attempts look just like they are home made rather than professional

I am the secretary of a brass band, we commissioned a web designer to create a new web site for us in WordPress. Personally, I think it was tricky to set up but I find it easy to maintain and upload new content etc. But I have also created a web site for my wife using Google Apps, and that was dead easy.
