Hi guys,

My girlfriend is going to Madeira next week and has got a BlackBerry Torch.

A few questions:

1. I'm guessing it's best to turn all connections off or else the data charges will be huge?

If she does this though she won't be able to use the phone for anything else (calls or texting).

Is there a way to just turn data off?

2. If she were to text while on holiday, would they be included in her free texts?

She's only going for a week, so it's not the worst thing in the world if she's phone-less, but ideally we want her to be able to text and make a call in an emergency.

Sorry, ignore the first question - I've just seen in the options you can turn "Data Services" and "While Roaming" off.

2. No, and the texts are likely to be more expensive than out-of-allowance texts in UK. Incoming texts are free and you can text her as usually without extra charges.

Make sure that roaming is activated in her account.

It depends mostly on her phone provider, but when I was with O2, their policy was that if you let them know in advance that you'll be going abroad, they can ensure you don't get charged extra.

Well, I'm 99.9% sure that was the case.

Speak to the phone provider, that's definitely your best bet

We are actually with O2 and I "spoke" with one of their gurus online today.

She said that the contract terms were only valid in the UK, so there would be charges in Madeira/Portugal; 10p including vat to send texts.

You should be able to get "Blackberry abroad". Phone CS and say you're going abroad and ask about Blackberry abroad as a bolt on. I had this done for me when I went to Norway for 9 days.

I didn't turn off my data services and my bill for the month was £70 and that included one and a half hours on MSN.
