UK retail sees surprise rise

UK retail sales unexpectedly rose 0.6% month-on-month in October, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has said.

Sales volumes had been expected to fall because it was thought the warmer weather would have put people off buying winter clothes.

The ONS said the food sector had seen a boost in October, driven mostly by promotions and pre-Christmas sales.

Sales volumes in small stores rose 5.3% year-on-year - the biggest increase since November 2004.

It's interesting though if you look at the data because clothing did actually see a decrease in sales - unseasonable weather but stores merchandised for seasonal weather - a contributing factor?

Some heavy discounting from the retailers more than made up for this. It's about time they started competing instead of just telling everyone that they're the cheapest.

I'm a bit odd in that I put more credence to properly collected statistics than unsubstantiated posts on an internet forum.

So what do you make of the report that the Germans suddenly found a missing 50 billion Euros from the sale of a bank.

It just goes to show that slight:rotfl: miscalculations can be made.

TBF you never said that when it was a fall last month.
If you accept one months, you really have to accept the next month also.

So in reality the last two months have equaled fairly flat.
